Right - I'm cleaning the bathroom now, and am determined to get rid of the revolting mould that I can never shift. It is mostly around the sealant on the bath, but also a bit on the tile grouting around the sink and bath - I've scrubbed and scrubbed it time and again, and used Dettol mould and mildew remover, and tried various other chemical sprays to no avail. It looks absolutely vile, and I've got to do something. I can't scrape the sealant off as I haven't got the wherewithall to replace it. Anyone please any ideas? Thank you so much!

Vodka? I have read somewhere that it is really good for cleaning mould off, especially in bathrooms. Sounds odd I know but I have definitely read it. I will see if I can find the link

LIZS · 21/08/2008 13:17

I used the new Flash Ulitmate on ours the other day - but if the sealant itself has discoloured I don't think you can shift that.

mindalina · 21/08/2008 13:18

Tip 2 - this isn't what I read before but says the same thing. I keep meaning to try it but haven't yet, so if you do let me know if it works

happynappies · 21/08/2008 13:18

Right - thank you Mindalina, it is worth a try!!!

agree the dettol stuff is good but it is v. difficult to get mould off the sealant as it seems to sort of eat into it

it is possible to re-do the sealant if you are really desperate...
remove old stuff with stanley knife
B&Q etc sell sealant
it's quite fun to squirt it on (though I seem to recall you also have to buy a special squirty thing)
think you have to leave overnight to dry and it's a bit whiffy...

happynappies · 21/08/2008 13:39

no luck - put the dettol green bottle on, tried neat bleach as well, then washed down with vodka - its the sealant that is the problem area. I guess it will have to be re-done, but finding the time to scrape it off, re-do and leave to dry for all that time might be difficult. Thanks for your ideas though!

bugger. I have the miracle solution - it's mould and mildew remover, but not Dettol - problem is, I am at work, it is at home - and I can't remember what brand it is....

CatIsSleepy · 21/08/2008 13:47

happynappies it doesn't take that long-the sealant peels off nicely in a long strip and it's quite quick to squirt the new stuff on and smooth it down
do it in the evening then it should be dry by morning
good luck!

ConstanceWearing · 21/08/2008 13:54

If you use vodka to clean mould and mildew off the bathroom, don't use a cloth to wipe it down afterwards. Use your tongue to lick it off.

Otherwise, what a farking waste of vodka.

JackieNo · 21/08/2008 14:01

And if you're re-doing the sealant, remember to fill the bath with water and leave it there overnight or whatever, while it's drying, otherwise the first time you fill the bath up, it'll pull the sealant away from the wall.

happynappies · 21/08/2008 14:08

thanks for the tip JackieNo - looks like I'll be re-doing the sealant. Constance if I wasn't pg I'd be into the bottle - as it is happy to use it as a bath cleaner!!!

you're not pregnant forever HN, and vodka keeps

TimeForMe · 21/08/2008 14:15

Dettox Mould and Mildew remover. Skirt liberally and do not inhale. Close door on bathroom and go make a cup of tea. Return to bathroom after drinking said tea to find all mould has magically disappeared! IT's brilliant stuff! HTH

bozza · 21/08/2008 14:16

Yes sealant has to be redone. The grout, however, can be cleaned with bleach and an old toothbrush.

SaintGeorge · 21/08/2008 14:16

Fill the bath with water when you re-do the sealant.

You need the bath to be at full weight to make sure the sealant dries in the correct position. Otherwise you risk it all cracking the first time you use the bath afterwards.

Unless of course you have a cast iron bath in which case

umbungo · 21/08/2008 16:22

dettox. now called dettol mould and something. green bottle.

keep the room well ventilated. use rubber gloves.

ellasmum1 · 21/08/2008 16:33

I got a good mould remover from homebase.very strong chlorine bleach type spray . if sealant totally black need to replace though.

Parazone bleach put on neat and left on for 30 mins will get rid of mould / mildew from the sealant.

domesticslattern · 21/08/2008 22:00

Sorry to hijack slightly, but what about on rubber bath mats? It says specifically on the Dettol Mould and Mildew bottle that it can't be used on rubber. Any ideas?

Washersaurus · 21/08/2008 22:05

Didn't someone successfully use Cola to clean bath toys, by soaking them overnight in a bowl of it. Maybe that might work on the rubber mat?

I tried the Dettol and the Black Mould Removing stuff from Lakeland and still have mouldy sealant. DH will never get around to replacing it so I just place objects, like shower gel bottles etc, over the mould patches

penona · 21/08/2008 22:06

I used something called HG mould remover (or similar name, was made by HG) - came from Lakeland Plastics and it actually worked! Needed a couple of applications but was amazed the sealant and tile grouting sparkling new.

Terrible waste of vodka otherwise

Washersaurus · 21/08/2008 22:08

HG - that is the one. I have tried it several times on my shower grout and it hasn't made the blindest bit of difference . It wasn't cheap either (fecking Lakeland scoundrels)
