When grout goes pink

pointydog · 25/07/2008 17:05

what can I do?

There's something in the water that starts to add a pink film to the white grout and around the shower hose.

It's a real pain to scrub away at the grout to keep it white.

ANy tips, good housekeepers?

its mould

WowOoo · 25/07/2008 17:07

Dettol mould and mildew cleaner is fab.

JackieNo · 25/07/2008 17:07

Lakeland? NO idea whether it works, though.

CatIsSleepy · 25/07/2008 17:08

you need bleach
Dettol mould and mildew remover spray is good

maidamess · 25/07/2008 17:08

Squirt bleach on it.

pointydog · 25/07/2008 17:09

is it really mould? What causes it?

And will regularly dousing with mould and mildew remover wear away my grout? (This is a new bathroom, I feel rather protective)

domestos grot buster, amazing, i just did all the grout in my shower with it, looks good as new!

pointydog · 25/07/2008 17:10

oo, might be sucked in by that lakeland spiel

CatIsSleepy · 25/07/2008 17:11

what causes it? general dampness I guess, condensation-need good ventilation so that tiles/walls don't stay wet for too long

I shouldn't think it will wear your grout away but I don't actually know!

StealthPolarBear · 25/07/2008 17:12

dettol mould and mildew, definitely
green spray bottle
miracle worker

pointydog · 25/07/2008 17:12

so water drying on the tiles causes it?

I could wipe them after a shower too, if that's the case

maidamess · 25/07/2008 17:12

Its prevalent in hard water areas. I think it might be the calcium

pointydog · 25/07/2008 17:13

ahh

CatIsSleepy · 25/07/2008 17:19

it's caused by the grout absorbing moisture-you can seal the grout apparently see here for DIY fun

Ivegotaheadache · 26/07/2008 11:17

I get this this pink colour around the silicone seal of the shower base, though not on the grout. It's well sealed so I don't think water is getting through the seal.
Is this mould? I didn't have a clue what it was, bleach gets rid of it but what will stop it forming?
Apart from wiping dry the shower after use which I just won't do .
I live in a very soft water area.

pointydog · 27/07/2008 12:28

yes, get it around the silicon showerscreen too. I hates it

I have the same problem.

Viakal and a scrubbing brush normally works. Rinse off with shower.

Grange · 29/07/2008 12:04

From working in housekeeping and leisure centres, I was always told it was body fat....

MrsTiddles · 29/07/2008 12:50

oh I feel sick now but I think you could be right.

I'm going to keep refering to it as mildew though.

LadyOfWaffle · 29/07/2008 13:02

I got ours off with some sort of mould cleaner - it's gross, isn't it?
