Packing to move house - is it worth buying boxes.

We are moving to Dorset from Lancashire on the 2nd of August, have been decluttering for ages - although not been near the loft yet

We have packed away all the bookcases in the house, dd bedroom - she is sleeping with us - and everyting non essential from living room and dining room. This has been done into plastic crates as dp got hold of some but I think they cost too much tbh to carry on doing that.

I have seen companies thatr sell moving boxes or complete packs. Have other people done this, can they recommend a company?

hi twinset. Your move is going ahead then. Did you find a school for DD in the end?

If you have a local freecycle, it's worth asking for cartons on that. Otherwise, I think the big storage places sell boxes, and maybe argos? Once you've moved you can flat pack them again.

We moved with Pickfords and they supplied the boxes, packing paper etc.

But of your not using a company you could try freecycle.
Ours always has adverts on for people giving away moving boxes and wanting them.

Yes dd is going to archbishop wake, she loved it when she looked around and dp was also happy.

We have a house as well, so ti is just the dreaded packing.

Eeeek at 2k!!!

Definately give your freecycle a try.

IllegallyBrunette · 19/07/2008 14:38

I am buying these once I know when I am moving.

ChippyMinton · 19/07/2008 14:40

Blandford is lovely. Good luck with your move

Are packers coming in for you? If so, they supply the boxes and uisually if you are having a compnay move you, and you pack, they will supply boxes.

We are packing so were going to buy boxes but was wondering if they were worth the money.

We've just moved and I have literally HUNDREDS of boxes. It's a shame you're not near London. If you could get here and are interested, email me.

midnightexpress · 19/07/2008 22:07

We got a load from a self-storage company - not terribly cheap, but they did do second-hand ones, cheaper than new - good quality and all the same - actually looked like new and were flat packed.

Advantage of a moving company is that they will usually come and uplift the empty boxes for free when you're done with them.

You could also try a supermarket - our local Asda told us to come at 8pm when the deliveries were done and we could go and pick what we wanted. they were all useless, as it turned out, but might be worth trying a big Tesco or some such.

We moved last year and when I was in a branch of Au Naturale I spied them stocking up the shelves so asked them if I could have the boxes and they gave me as much as I wanted. They were really tough durable boxes- loads of shops will do this if you ask I bet. Better than spending lots of something you will only use a short while!

When we moved a couple of years back, I bought a set of boxes off ebay. Quite cheap and did the job.

I really hope you have some big strapping people to help you move if you are doing it yourself.

We moved 100 miles and paid £1200 that included them storing our stuff over night so that we could have it delivered at 9am the next day instead of moving in at 6pm in winter. It was costly because it involved 2 crews, one to move us out, the driver, and then the crew to move us in.

That was a 3 bed house move.

We had boxes provided for us by the removal company which means they stack really well into the van and also in rooms until you get round to unpacking.

We stopped moving ourselves before we had children as it was physically exhausting to pack that many boxes and items of furniture into a van and back out again and up and down stairs etc.

I know £2k is a lot of money when you are moving but if one of you fell ill for those 5 days you may struggle to get all your stuff out. Plus we paid for insurance so that any damage done to the house we were leaving was covered by them.

I hope your move goes well.
