Laminate flooring in bathroom?

Yes, I know, I know, shouldn't have wood or laminate in a bathroom... but I want it [stomps foot] B&Q do this Aqua-Loc thingy laminate, which they promise me will be fine for a bathroom and they say they've never had any problems with it and it's guaranteed and everything.

Has anybody here installed laminate suitable for bathrooms but still had problems with it? Am trying to convince my Dad that it will be fine but not having much luck

We have laminate in our bathroom, although it was there when we moved in so I don't know what type it is. It's absolutely fine, never had any problems with it. I didn't know you weren't supposed to have it...

Tinkjon · 05/07/2008 14:05

Yeah, if water gets in the joins the whole lot can blow. Apparently the waterproof stuff is fine... but try telling that to a traditionalist

Why not have lino? I put down lino in our bathroom and it is lovely You can get wood effect as good as laminate but it is much easier to lay, no worries about water, and much warmer on your feet.

SqueakyPop · 05/07/2008 14:08

We have laminate in one of our bathrooms - it was the bathroom grade from B&Q, so probably Aqua-Loc. It's been down for about 4 years now and we have no concerns.

The hardest thing is laying it in confined spaces - you should have heard DH going on and on and on.

Love2bake · 05/07/2008 14:10

We have laminate in our bathrooms, it's fine.

Tinkjon · 05/07/2008 16:10

Thanks, everyone! nooka, I did consider lino, but decided I'd prefer laminate...

we have b & Q tile-loc in the kitchen and it's fine with any spillages and wet mopping. I love it so much was going to put it in the bathroom when we do it. AFAIK it is designed for kitchens and bathrooms.

We have laminate in our kitchen (rented house) and I hate it - it's cold to bare feet and shows up every bit of dirt and dust. It also gets scratched/damaged quite easily - I dropped my mobile phone charger and it took quite a chunk out of the laminate which is quite noticeable. I know that's not what you were asking about, but I just thought I'd stick my two pennorth in!

Tinkjon · 05/07/2008 18:12

We have laminate in several other rooms and I never find it cold but I do agree about the dirt & dust! My theory with that was that I'd rather see the dust so I could clean it up - but it turns out I'm lazy and it just looks dusty a lot of the time Thanks for the heads-up about the tile-loc, Furball - I wasn't entirely happy with the limited choice in the Aqua-Loc range, so will check that out too.

I am going to disagree with everyone, we chose to put aqua loc from B&Q down in our bathroom.

It was all fine until ds1 kept missing the toilet and leaving a small puddle that obviously me having a new born baby didn't see after every wee.

I now have to put lino down instead, nice cushioned non-slip lino as I have 2 blown joints round the toilet. The laminate was even laid before the bathroom suite was put in and the fitter put silicone sealant around the base of the toilet but alas my son's wee has still managed to penetrate the joint.

I love laminate, have it in my dining room and my kitchen but if you have boys or god forbid a man who can miss the bowl, rethink!!!

eandh · 05/07/2008 21:08

we had waterproof stuff in ols house was fine, tis house we cheated and put wood effect lino down then changed to mosiac lino!

eandh · 05/07/2008 21:09

sorry sticky keys and random letters missing in that last post

ja9 · 05/07/2008 21:12

we had gorgeous laminate in our bathroom and kitchen in last house. on move in day washing machine leek and the whole floor buckled... would advise not to have it - it's only fine until something goes wrong...

ja9 · 05/07/2008 21:13

leaked

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/07/2008 21:16

have you considered this harvey maria flooring we had the water one in our old bathroom

kiddiz · 05/07/2008 22:23

Some friends of ours put some kind of waterproof sealant on their laminate in the bathroom and kitchen. Sorry don't know what it was called.
Someone else I know had laminate in the kitchen and her washer leaked and ruined the whole floor.
The fitter that put laminate down for my parents in their kitchen, hall and conservatory strongly advised them not to put laminate in the bathroom.

kiddiz · 05/07/2008 22:25

Also told us when we were looking for laminate for our conservatory not to buy the stuff in B&Q. He wasn't going to gain a sale either so fairly impartial advice.

themoon66 · 05/07/2008 22:31

Laminate in our bathroom is okay around the shower where it gets wet. The bad bit is around the loo, where DS is unable to wee straight. It is lifting and smells horrible.

I am planning to replace with rubber flooring.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/07/2008 22:56

we have polished floorboardswhich seem fine

nannyL · 06/07/2008 10:10

my mum and step dad have just put water prrof B&Q laminite in theire bathroom....

it looks fine BUT has only been down for 4 weeks so far
also there are only adults in their house and i cant imagine them getting it excessivley wet at all!

I have 'laminate effect lino' (also from B&Q)in my bathroom.... my dad didnt even realise it wasnt laminate Personally id choose what i have as it looks prety much the same and doesnt matter at all if it gets wet!

Tinkjon · 08/07/2008 13:27

those of you who've had problems with it(ja9, themoon66) - was it laminate which is supposed to be ok for bathrooms or normal laminate, do you know?

Maybe I'd better rethink the lino - is it hard to clean? For some reason I imagine it marking...

sandyballs · 08/07/2008 13:31

Our laminate has been fine - been down for about 4/5 years, and my two girls have often drenched the bathroom when showering and have also missed the loo.

ja9 · 08/07/2008 13:57

tinkjon, i don't know.. it was there when we moved in, sorry.

themoon66 · 09/07/2008 10:28

same here... it was in when we moved in. As it was put in by the builder, I guess it's the cheapest available and not specially made for bathrooms.

mistypeaks · 09/07/2008 10:39

We put laminate in our bathroom. It is the bathroom friendly aqua stuff. We made sure we used lots of 'click-guard' (real name I promise) on each joint. We also used the recommended underlay. So far no problems.
