You can use the fridge or a cupboard for bananas. Maybe in a brown bag.
I have a fruit fly trap on my kitchen windowsill at this time of year. Small glass or shallow dish ( Gu pots are good) with some wine or cider and a few drops of washing up liquid. Works well.

I put my fruit bowl under the big glass dome of my cake stand.

It has made a big difference!

I read about that remedy with vinegar but it’s not working for us. Only a tiny proportion of the flies have landed in the liquid. We’ve never had this problem before this year???

Oh no. I can’t use vinegar my husband hates the smell.

I make sourdough bread
The starter is a great trap for them. I put it in a bowl with cling film on the top and put small holes in the cling film
They love it.
If you dont make sourdough try the above with wine or beer. They all land in my glass if I drink wine
I tried the above with apple cider vinegar and washing up liquid and didn't get a single victim

Same here got loads and vinegar traps not really working

katie24680 · 17/08/2026 19:05

I put cider apple vinegar with a spoon of sugar and a few drops of dish soap in a bowl, it stinks but I’ve trapped loads of fruit flies

They like fermenting stuff not just overripe fruit. So keep drain and bin clean, wipe up spills etc

Ok ive moved the fruit from a clith covered dish to a bowl with a lid (well several bowls with lids as we eat a lot of fruit!)

And over night its been amazing I will monitor the situation

I had a terrible problem with these and the ones that live in plants. I tried all the above with varying degrees of success but didn’t get rid of the problem till I bought a portable uv zapper and left it on in the kitchen overnight. Seemed to get them all until a new lot hatched and then did it again. Repeat when necessary but hardly any at all now.

Make an apple cider vinegar trap.
They are bad this year.

Use a net umbrella to cover the bowl you are storing them in so the flies can't get near the fruit, you can get them in lots of sizes these days.
