Dyson or Shark? Upright vac recommendations please!

Any thoughts please about either of these two brands - or specific models to look out for?

I’ve usually had a Dyson but they are quite heavy to lift and I think there must be lighter types. I like a clear cylinder and a traditional upright style. I do have a Henry that I use while decorating but it irrationally annoys me for normal vacuuming.

Anybody able to recommend something they have bought recently please?

After 3 Dysons I bought a Henry, cannot fault it but it's a cumbersome vacuum, so went for a Shark with extra battery(and specifically for pets, don't have pets but long hair). It's a stick one so light and easy to move around after the heavy upright Dysons, but dear god I end up having to clean the filters out so many times, even just hoovering up a little dust after drilling 4 holes for curtain poles it just clogged up.

So end up lugging the Henry back out, not impressed with Shark after 6 months use. But better than my last Dyson

We have a GTech battery carpet cleaner. It's brilliant and we are very happy. It's light weight, strong cleaning, easy to clean. It cost about£180

I have always had the animal ball dysons but the most recent is heavy and stiff! Would be interested in a different corded upright

Vax all the way after having a Dyson, shark and now vax

We’ve got a Shark corded vacuum cleaner and a cordless one. The corded one is almost 10 years old and the cordless one is about 7. They both still work really well. The battery on the cordless one doesn’t last as long as it did, but that’s to be expected. I priced up a new battery but it’s not much more money to buy a new vacuum so I shall do that when it finally goes.

When I replace them both it will be with Sharks again, because they’ve lasted far longer than any other vacuum I’ve had including a Dyson. And I bought DS2 and DDIL a cordless Dyson about 3yrs ago but it’s not lasted as well as my Shark.

Thank you all - I need to do some research

I have also had three Dysons, which is not great in terms of lifespan. I genuinely can’t lug the Henry around the house. I might go to John Lewis or somewhere and practise carrying them around!

I have a cordless Shark upright and it's the most high-maintainance thing I have ever encountered (on a par with an 90's office laser printer). I literally have to unclog the whole bastard thing nearly every time I use it. Our house is pretty clean but the dust and bits of fluff build up where the 'neck' meets the foot part so nothing gets into the clear 'bin'. I can't tell you how often I have to put a tea-towel over one end of the upright 'hose' thing and blow all the crap out to unblock it. I hate it.

But I may just be unlucky.

Dyson is ok but over rated. Shark is terrible. I went back to Henry.

I hated mine it stopped working so many times whilst under warranty. But they won’t let you return it. They sent me so many parts I reckon I had 3 whole sharks in 3 years. In the end I gave up and chucked it in the bin

Any suggestions for a not too powerful one ?.
I know this sounds odd but I have very old carpets and fear some of the newer machines suck so voraciously that the carpet might disintegrate...
