Repairing a five-year-old washing machine or buying a replacement?

Should I buy a new washing machine or repair my old one which is 5 years old and has had to be repaired twice in the last few weeks.

I think it's an electrical fault. The first repair replaced a fuse the second repair put on a new plug. After that it worked a few more times when I turned it off at the mains and switched it back on again but now it doesn't work at all.

I would usually try to repair but don't want to throw good money after bad! WWYD?

I'd replace. It will probably be a pain to find the fault, and it may catch fire.

I think in this case you may be best to replace but isn't it shit that washing machines don't last very long. I have an Indesit, it's 12 years old and been repaired twice. I've decided next time it goes I will buy new.

Also how much did you pay for it and how much do the repairs cost?

I'd replace with a larger drum one.

We hss as ve had two repairs in the last year on a five year old hot point eco bubble because the repairer said it was a great machine and had a lot of time left in it and dh ran with it. I said it’s used twice a day and sometimes three or four times at the weekend, add that together and do you not think it’s probably done its job and dh said no way (because he’s a man let’s be honest- no I’m not bitter). The clothes are not smelling the best unless we use smelly washing powder and now fabric conditioner (which I never used). I’ve had to drain it, clean out filter and use cleaner umpteen times and dh is still saying ‘no, it’s a great model!’

I’d be in the get a new one camp!!!!

Wow. You run your wm 16 times a week.

I use mine 3 times a week and they usually last around 15 years so I think that you are correct.

yeah I know, it’s terrible but there’s six of us (and as people say a dog and a cat but there’s not much washing for them!)

My Miele is 20 yrs old. I remember thinking it was expensive at the time but would probably be out of my price range now. Just as well it’s still going strong and we’ve never had a problem with it. The newer ones are probably more energy efficient but it cleans my clothes okay so guess I’ll stick with this one. Yes, if I were you, OP, I’d replace just because of fire danger. I’d google as to the most reliable and take out an extended warranty.

Thanks everyone..it's maddening to have to replace it as I only use it 2/3 a week. It's an AEG and a Which best buy! I remember paying a bit more for it, it's mid range I'd say.

Unfortunately I have been told washing machines are designed to only last 4 to 5 years!!! I’d get a new one. If you’ve already had to repair it already it’s not looking good.
