What the heck is the right way to use kitchen surface cleaner

Am I being daft?! Cleaning sprays - how do you use them 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I used to be a spray and wipe gal, but after a recent bout of hand foot and mouth in the house discovered ypu have to leave milton on the surfaces for 5 mins to be effective, and in turn discovered for the first time at 41 years old that its the same for most other disinfectant or cleaning sprays!

So my question is, are we all spraying all over the counter and leaving it wet wet, and drying 5 mins later (in which case I will be getting through a LOT of spray!) Or does spraying and wiping so the surfaces are obviously damp with a thin layer of product work?

Who knew at 41 that I didnt know how to clean my kitchen 🤣🤣

Well I usually use a clean cloth and a bowl of hot soapy water and clean thoroughly with that first, then use the spray afterwards and wipe that off with kitchen paper.

Doing it that way, you've got rid of any mess and most of the germs before you even start with the spray.

It depends on the spray. Some you can just spray and wipe. Day to day I just do spray and wipe regardless, I do it properly when there is illness in the house, like tummy bugs

If you're using chopping boards there shouldn't be many germs on the work surfaces anyway. With the sink I spray, clean the rest of the kitchen and co.e back to it. I also fill with hot water and disinfectant and chuck the washing up brushes in there once a week, then wipe and rinse after

Proper disinfectants have instructions on them which tell you how to use the product to disinfect. The issue with a lot of disinfectants, especially in this weather, is that the surface has to stay wet for minutes for it to disinfect.

I’ve got granite tops and I’m very careful about what I put on there. After a lot of trial and error I’ve discovered that either a sink of hot water and some fairy liquid or a few sprays of the yellow elbow grease spray is fine wiped on and scrubbed with a wet cloth and dried with a kitchen towel straight after.
ive never used disinfectant to my knowledge and if I leave product sitting on my worktops it leaves a horrible mark so it gets wiped and dried immediately.

I just spray and wipe, I'm not trying to make my counters sterile just clean, we don't put generally put food directly on them. If we get a bout of illness I spray all the taps, doorhandles and light switches with Dettox and leave it.

Sometimes, since discovering Mumsnet, I wonder how my family survived with very few illnesses…
(And what’s more, we share towels and I only wash them once a week.)

I just spray then wipe with kitchen paper and throw it away. I don't spray, wait 5mins then wipe. I've clearly been doing wrong too!

MIL uses 'the cloth'. Its an all purpose cloth with many uses- drying plates, cleaning work surfaces, swatting flies, cleaning the dogs paw, cleaning dirt on the floor etc. How they haven't contracted noro or something worse is beyond me 🤢

Devilsmommy · 10/08/2026 10:24

I use the Flash Spray Wipe Done spray and do it exactly that way.

Leavesandthings · 10/08/2026 10:25

I spray, do another task, then wipe. But not if I'm just quickly wiping up.

Whosthetabbynow · 10/08/2026 10:27

I use Domestos spray and a cloth as I go. I don’t leave crumbs etc to build up. I spray the worktops down if shopping bags have been placed on them. I use a glass chopping board

Darragon · 10/08/2026 11:26

I spray, go and clean something else like saucepans or similar for 5 minutes, then wipe.

Just done the food hygiene course! You need to clean work surfaces to remove food, spills etc using cleaner or hot soapy water as appropriate then you spray the surface with cleaner to bs whatever (basically the one that contains bleach) and let that dry.
