How much would you expect to pay for 53 hours of plumbing?

We had a new boiler fitted,
new gas supply to it from outside of the house,
floor boards across the whole top floor had to come up,
Condensation waste pipe had to be rerouted out of house into a waste pipe (this work had to be carried out over a conservatory roof without good access),
A new flue was fitted to take it away from two bedroom windows,

3 plumbers over three days who did all together about 50 hours work.

Also, they were lovely blokes, really efficient, appeared to do excellent work and we were impressed.

What sort of figure would you expect to pay in total just for labour before tax?

guess it depends where you are but hmm, I'm going to say £1500

micci25 · 26/06/2008 18:52

a lot!! plumbers are really expensive! im sorry i cant answer your question with an actual fugure as we have always used a friend to do our plumbing and he only charges for parts!

i know when dp had his boiler and radiators fitted by an agency through the council (he is disabled) the biull would have been £2.5k

LadyOfWaffle · 26/06/2008 18:53

RubySlippers · 26/06/2008 18:54

I'd say closer to 5k for all that.

lulumama · 26/06/2008 18:55

i reckon £75 minimum labour per day.

reckon ruby is about right

ipanemagirl · 26/06/2008 18:55

Thanks Delgirl, good guess, it was about 1800 before VAT. So maybe we weren't burnt too badly.

My dh and mil both thought it was a good rate for the complexity and difficulty of the work. Also British Gas quoted us nearly 2 grand more than this lot!

a boiler costs a grand or even more if you get a whizzy condensing boiler

RubySlippers · 26/06/2008 18:57

£1800 before VAT is fantastic!

ipanemagirl · 26/06/2008 18:57

Wow, thanks for replies - so 1800 isn't too bad then?!!

I was trying to work out their rate per hour, or rate per diem. But I'd agreed to an amount before they started the work so I guess that just isn't the right way to look at it?

This was just for labour not parts.

RubySlippers · 26/06/2008 18:58

ah, so is my £3.5 k nearer to the overall total then ...

ipanemagirl · 26/06/2008 19:03

plus Vat it was about 3800. scary but the old boiler was unmendable and we were so sick of not having reliable hot water, plus baby on the way......

But at least our bills should be smaller with a new efficient combination boiler - or so they say?!?!?

Rubyslippers - you're good!

SammyC · 26/06/2008 19:13

I assume its a condensing boiler you have had fitted? They are very cost effective.

ipanemagirl · 26/06/2008 20:46

Yes sammy it's one of those ones! we'll have more control I think, the old boiler was so decrepit it would only produce hot water after you'd run it for 5 minutes!

RubySlippers · 26/06/2008 20:58

i have just had something very similar done

SlapAndTickle · 26/06/2008 21:13

lol I've also just had similar and would have said the same as Ruby

mishymoo · 26/06/2008 21:18

That's not a bad price! I work for a small family run plumbing company and we charge £40 per hour plus VAT. Our quotes for new boilers are easily between £3,500 right up to £57,000 (but that was for a huge manor house).

We had our boiler changed last year for a Combi boiler and after getting through the winter, we were over £70 in credit with our gas bill so you should definitely see a drop in your bills soon.

ipanemagirl · 26/06/2008 22:11

Mishymoo, 57 grand!! whoah that must have been some BIG house! Pimp my Crib!

Thank you all for making me feel so much better. I love mumsnet..... it is the Mothership of Easy Access Reassurance for the Anxious and Worried!

I had woken up this morning thinking: 'is that right, could that be a fair price???' and having a proper cold sweat about it!
