What can you put in green (for composting) wheely bin to deter smells/flies?

Our council has just introduced a new system where you are supposed to put all your food waste (not just stuff you would put on the compost heap) in the green wheely bin - which was originally just for garden waste. Even though it's not that warm yet ours is starting to pong a bit (even when it's shut) and there are too many flies hovering about for my liking...

Has anyone got any advice on what I could do to improve things (short of abandoning the new improved system)? I know some places sell a special powder you can sprinkle on, but would prefer something more natural (and cheaper) if possible...

Cironella oil is a good idea - will try that - any idea where to buy it? Have seen the candles on sale but not the oil...

gfm, i put all my food waste in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer and the night before bin day i take out one massive frozen lump of food waste and wrap in some newspaper...it's got rid of any smelly probs and means you don't have to keep cleaning your bin.....hth.
