How are your Uni Kids/Young Adults Coping with Housework?

I am a solo cleaner, and as it rolls around to this time of year again, I have to ask parents of University Students and recent graduates in Flats/Houseshares some questions that have always baffled me due to what I see out in "the field".

  1. Do you ensure there is a hoover and decent mop and mop bucket in the house? Is this one of the things you ensure your kids have as part of their "starter kit" when they move out?

  2. Do you ever visit where they are staying?

  3. If you know your kid isn't "domesticated", did you worry about how they will maintain their own space? Did you bring this up when they spoke of moving away/out?

  4. Do any of your kids have a cleaner?

I've seen some shocking places on end of tenancy cleans this year. Young men and women equally and all in expensive London properties. Some really beautiful homes damaged through literally not cleaning regularly. Not parties or anything like that, just grime, limescale and built up filth.

1 no not my job to buy him a hoover and mop
2 yes I did visit his flat share once
3 but he was pretty well domesticated anyway largely thanks to St John Cadets and he used to nag his flatmate to clean the bathroom
4 no never

On Q1, it's more about ensuring they know they need one. The house I did today, 4 students have lived there for a year and they don't have a hoover or a mop. They had a dirty broom. The dust and dirt was awful. The floors were black.

Uni supplied hoover. I did visit it was always ok. Not to my standards but they are just not that bothered.

Absolutely not. When mine went to uni I figured they were as domestic as I was required to make them and it’s up to them thereafter. I visited once in the university accommodation and several times once they had their own places. I formed no opinion about their housework because it’s not something that I care about or have any interest in.

I took no notice. It took my dd three days to clean her room and the rest of her flat in her final year. I didn’t go in any of the places she lived in apart from the moving in day.
