Washing machine eats my bras.

hexsnidgett · 29/06/2026 20:12

The washing machine eats my bras, I have been washing them in mesh bags, but they still get chomped. Do I have to start handwashing? Or are there better bags I can use?

oH, I was going to suggest little wash bags, how come they get chomped?

I'll post my wash bags in a min

SavageGarden23 · 29/06/2026 20:14

You have answered your own question. Handwash or gentler wash cycles.

Potooooooooes · 29/06/2026 20:14

Does your machine have a gentle wash programme or are you just bunging in on 40 mixed?

likelysuspect · 29/06/2026 20:41

i cannot find anywhere the order I made for the specifc ones

But my pack of wash bags had 4 big bags and 2 small containers, one of which is a bra bag, like this

Put one bag inside another?

hexsnidgett · 29/06/2026 20:59

The washing machine came with the house and just chews underwires and the bags too!
I will try the bra specific bags.

It might be cheaper, and less stress inducing, to buy a different washing machine. That thing would probably soldier on for decades. How much have you spent on new bras and bags so far in comparison to a new washer?

Er about £50!

I have heard that new built in washing machines are not only expensive, but sometimes difficult to find.
So I obviously want to avoid doing that.

You aren't meant to wash wired bras in a washing machine.

Oh okay 😂 I know some people spend over £50 per bra so the washer eating four would be getting to the bottom price of a decent mid-range washer.

Perhaps use a double bagged laundry bag system. There are specific bra laundry bags which you could place inside a larger delicates laundry bag. Think B&M sell both for under £3.

I do mine on a wool wash and they’re fine. Who has the time to hand wash bras?!

Moistcottonchafers · 01/07/2026 12:33

I wash mine separately on delicate and switch off the spin cycle so the machine just drains. Then I hang them to drip dry.

Same here. In lingerie bags. Are you spinning them @hexsnidgett ? That will definitely destroy wired bras. I have sometimes put them on a slow spin though and they’ve been fine.
How are they getting chewed up? Do they get stuck in the door seal?

ThatMintMember · 01/07/2026 13:35

Mesh bag per bra, delicate cycle (40 degrees), i only put them in with one or 2 other items such as some cardigans, they are wired but never had a problem.

Is it definitely not the bras at fault? What does the care label say?

hexsnidgett · 01/07/2026 15:07

I have had a feel in the drum and it seems one of the plastic paddle parts is loose and there's a sharp edge. I have ordered a replacement part, hopefully it's not too tricky to replace.

I have never in my long life put my bras in the washing machine. I wait till I have two or three and then hand wash them. They are too expensive to trust to a machine. They cost more than most of my tops.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/07/2026 19:39

I use these [[
https://applink.ikea.com/tY8M9r9M4w--30432502--gb--en. The fabric is very thin, and water washes right through.

I have never in my long life hand-washed bras! I put them in a mesh bag and they go in the machine with other delicates. Never had a problem.

andrinaballerina · 01/07/2026 21:29

So when I started spending £50+ on bras I started hand washing them - but only because I found a fab product which makes handwashing a doddle. I would highly recommend trying Soak; put a teaspoon of it in a basin of water, add a few bras and leave them to soak for 15 min or so, then hang dry. No rinsing or faff. https://amzn.eu/d/014NwsEC I buy it from my bra lady but you can find it on Amazon,

I'm tempting fate now but I have always just bunged my underwired bras in with a mixed load with (so far) no consequences for machine or bra. 😃

This thread has been an education for me!

NattyKnitter116 · 01/07/2026 21:55

I just chuck mine in a wash bowl with lenor before I go to bed then put them in for a rinse and spin in the morning, especially at the moment as they are grim after 24 hours in this heat! I have 3 on rotation - I think they are close to death actually as the elastics looking really sad!
