Reusable cloths smell?

I’ve washed them on a hot wash, left them in the sun but they still smell when I use them.

Any advice?

Do you means cloths? I don’t find they smell after washing but I don’t think they smelt before washing.
Try some Oxyaction? That’s my go-to for anything that doesn’t smell clean after a wash

Yes I did mean cloths and it won’t let me edit it now!

Rinse them in cold water after you use them. It’s like magic…
I just chuck mine in the washing machine with everything else… I’ve put them in the dishwasher before too. Mine always smelt before I found the cold water trick… thank you nice lady on instagram!

You have to let them dry BEFORE you wash.

So change them regularly. We go through 2-3 a day. In our utility I hang them on the edge of the wash basket to dry and then kick them in the next day. They then can happily sit until being washed and will not smell.

Oh yes and we do use oxyaction every wash so maybe that’s helping to.

But regardless of the oxy if you put a damp cloth in the wash it will 100% smell of damp after.

What are they made of?

I have microfiber and soak in cold water and a dash of bleach before washing at 90. Bleach is supposed to wreck the fibres but they seem fine and don't smell.

You can also soak in very hot water and washing powder.

FinishedAtFifty · 27/06/2026 04:21

@Mclaren10 100% cotton.

Perhaps look up strip washing which uses borax, washing soda and hot water to dissolve leftover stuff on your cloths.

Most recipes are bathtub size so you will have to work out your proportions.

I wash all my cloths (flannels, tea towels, kitchen cloths, car cleaning cloths, washable wipes with poo/food on etc etc) together once a week. They definitely smell damp before they go in!

I wash them at 40° for an hour with detergent and Dettol Laundry Cleansers (or shop equiv) and then add in my washing and do the normal cycle with detergent. So the cloths get two full washes, one with laundry cleanser.

None of my cloths smell after washing. I confidently use any cloth for any purpose because they are absolutely clean after washing.

I soak mine then boil them on the hob for 5 mins before drying them. It keeps them fresh and stops them smelling.

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2026 13:52

Ariel cold wash gel. Mine never smell.
