Just wondering do you wash or dry clean your duvets ?
Which is best ?
I sent mine to the dry cleaners in the past but I read somewhere that is not the best for them.

I just buy a new one once a year, I get cheap ones from Tesco, Dunelm or Argos, costs just a few pounds more to buy new then to wash at a laundrette

That's very wasteful and bad for the environment. Much more so than washing and reusing them.

Mine get washed once a year. The couple that don't fit in my washing machine go to the cleaners, though just for washing rather than dry cleaning.

Wash them. We use coverless duvets and only ever use 7tog maximum - currently have 2.5tog - so they easily fit in my 10kg washing machine. Dry them on the line in nice weather, or over an airer with the dehumidifier on. I have tumble dried them, but the larger ones tend to smell a bit weird when they’ve been in the dryer, so don’t like doing that!

Wash

Wash. I have summer and winter duvets so they get washed and put away when I change them over. I have a 10kg washing machine and have synthetic, not feather, duvets.

I never have - I put them on the bannister to ‘air’ when we change the beds.
I air the beds (and the house) every morning rain / hail / snow wevs - in the dry weather I’ll stick them on the line to air on bed changing day.

I now feel scummy. Can I machine wash a speaking feather thing? It was expensive- I don’t want to make it go wrong?

I think you have more problems than a grubby duvet if it has speaking feathers in it ! 😄

What about pillows? They can't be washed in the washing machine as it ruins them.

We just replace our pillows every 2 years or so.

Mine go to the local laundry service for a wash.

Dry cleaning is chemicals, I wouldn't want my bedding with a chemical residue. I don't do either.

They don’t dry clean duvets the amount of chemical it would take would make it beyond cost-effective. They shove it in an industrial sized washing machine
That has not ever had any animal Hair in it unlike your local launderette

How on earth ate you all getting them in the washer ? There is not a hope in hell even my lightest summer one would fit in mine.

Mine is currently soaking in the ibath I will stomp on it a few times this evening and put it out to dry overnight.

That's one of the reasons I bought one that has a zip down the middle. I can wash each half separately.

AgnesMcDoo · 20/06/2026 13:57

Neither

Dearg · 20/06/2026 13:58

My Superking has two layers a 4.5 and a 9 together. ( they are not feather)

Each ‘half’ fits in my 9kg capacity machine and would go in the dryer if needed, but generally I choose a sunny day. I was them a couple of times per year.

Nannyfannybanny · 20/06/2026 13:59

Washed at home. 7 tog winter king size fits in the machine no problem .It's washed before putting into storage, the summer 4.5 is on now
Spare bed ones are feather and down, they get hung on the line.

TheSmallAssassin · 20/06/2026 14:00

No duvets get dry cleaned @deeahgwitch - I send my doubles to Johnsons when I switch between summer/winter weights, but they wash them in an industrial sized machine.

Singles fit in our washing machine and tumble dryer.

OttersOnAPlane · 20/06/2026 14:10

That reminds me I must wash ours this week while it's warm.

DS1 is a sweaty guy so I wash his duvet about 6 times a year - feathers, in the washer with an extra large drum.

The others get washed once a year. And hang on the line for a couple of days for the feathers to fully dry.

Pillows get washed once a year for me, DS2 and DD. Three times a year for DH because he's bald and his pillows get grubby quicker.

Bridgertonisbest · 20/06/2026 14:21

We have a wool duvet that won’t fit in our washing machine but can’t be dry cleaned so I’ve sent it away to be washed once or twice.

sunshine is antibacterial so I shall be hanging it in the sun in the upcoming heatwave.
