Rug Doctor or Bissell for a thorough carpet clean?

Carpet Cleaning - I'm having a new sofa delivered soon and I would like to give my living room carpet a good clean before hand. It is dirty! I don't think disgusting but, we have cats and it has been in situ while we have had toddlers and all the associated spillages etc.

I have a a bissell carpet cleaner - which to be honest I'm not sure is that great, it doesn't seem to deposit much water/cleaner, it has been fine for shampooing after a sick incident (and to be honest a godsend) but I'm not sure it will give the carpet the thorough clean I would like. I have hired a rug doctor before and felt it did a good job, but not for a number of years, and now I wonder if it really is better than my Bissell.

So what to do? which is better?

Also is it down to the cleaning fluid (I'm not keen on the bissell fluid as I think it may have made my cats ill).

Thanks

Vax. For me in a different league to either of those. Buying direct is normally the best option for price and extras

The Rug Doctor is definitely a step up for a deep, deep clean compared to the household Bissells, especially with toddler and cat stains!
A little trick though: you don't actually have to use the harsh Rug Doctor or Bissell fluids if you're worried about the cats. You can use Prochem liquid carpet cleaner diluted in the machine instead professional carpet cleaners swear by it, it cleans much better, doesn't leave a sticky residue, and it's much kinder to paws once it's dry
