Hi, my washing machine is on its last legs so I’m after recommendations before it dies
I don’t want one that has an app or anything fancy. 8 or 9kg drum for towels/bedding.

Miele.

Mine's been going brilliantly for years.

My old Miele was amazing. Served well for over 20 years.
My new Miele is a bit disappointing. Does the job ok but doesn't perform any better than the old one at the end of its life and has fewer options than I liked.

AEG. My first one lasted 32 years with a couple of minimal repairs. The new one (5 years old) is fabulous as well. They also have a great customer service.

I always comment on these threads that just because someone has a Miele that’s 20 years old and still going strong, it just means that Miele built good machines 20 years ago. And given that they are north of a grand these days, my inclination would be to buy a budget Beko for £250 and if you have to replace it in a few years you’ll probably still be quids in, considering the improvements in efficiency that have been made over the years.

We tend to prioritise large drum, delay start and not defaulting to an eco cycle that takes 4 hours. Our bottom of the range Bosch is doing just fine after about 8 years.

We bought a Siemens washer because the previous two were excellent (wish I'd paid the £500 to have the old one repaired now).
The new one is a pain in the arse, mainly because of the Eco features, which invariably end up meaning I use more electricity trying to get round them (and annoyingly it points out the power use)

There's no pre wash, never occurred to me that washers didn't always have them, so I end up washing twice sometimes.
The Eco washes are too long and the clothes smell like they have been sitting in dirty water.
It doesn't rinse as well, often have to add an extra rinse. Doesn't spin well either, it's a 1400 spin, but the 1400 isn't available on many of the programs, the 1200 doesn't spin as well as the old washer so either an extra spin or longer in the dryer.
I've had to switch to a stronger detergent to get things clean.
The machine also smells stale very easily, I clean it, the drawer is clean and I leave the drawer and door open.
Also the 9kg wash is only available on one program.

So after that rant 🙈 My advice would be research the machine, check the program times and weight limits. It may be super A rated, but only on programs that take 4hrs and leave your clothes smelly.

Indesit My Time.
9kg, short wash times, straightforward to use.

Washing machines are disposable now a days poor quality but that is reflected in the price
my mum always bangs on about nothing lasting poor quality and her first washer lasted 28years but it’s all relevant she paid what was the equivalent of a month and 1/2 wages for it where as not there not even a weeks wages

the new ones wash completely different low water levels and a 3 hour program is normal

quick wash’s are shit and only designed for partial loads there ok for freshening lightly soiled stuff but after a while towels and gym stuff don’t come clean and will have an ingrained smell

I’d budget £300 something you use everyday and if you get 4 years out of it you’ve had value for money

indesit and Zanussi have always been ok us

muddyford · 31/05/2026 08:55

I always had Zanussi but the last two only lasted a couple of years. It's only two people's washing. I now have a 9kg Hoover which is fine.

Sunshineandrainbow · 31/05/2026 08:56

I like my AEG washing machine, I use it 3 times a week and it's about 5 years old. Had zanussi eco bubble before this and lots went wrong luckily it had a 5 year warranty.

Thanks all, great tips. @Bamaluzthat looks the kind of machine i’m after 🙂

No longer what they were.

I've just got a new Beko washing machine. I think it was about £280. So far so good! Lots of cycles and spin speed variety.
