Any ideas on good brands? Cost? Can you make organic loaves in them? Sorry to be so Billy Basic with these questions, just am bored with supermarket bread prices and don't have time to do the full kneading/rising malarkey.

I have one ( can't remember the name right now, will get back to you on that one). Most people that have them will probably tell you that they use them at first and then they sit in the cupboard. However, it is nice to get it out every now and then especially in the winter and make fresh bread - the smell wafts through the house it's lovely. You can make any sort of bread - there are usually a selection of flours in the supermarket. The one I have has a timer that can be set the night before and then you wake up to fresh bread. I shall find out the name in a minute ( just sat down after a long walk).

Thanks.
Good for you with the long walk!
I am the bit the same with my smoothie maker in that I use it and the kids love it in the summer but it is away in the winter...

Panasonic - go for the one with the seed dispenser you can do seeded loafs and raisin breads as well. They're around £70 of amazon.

Morphy Richards

And yes you can make organic loaves in them ..... if you use organic ingredients.

Seasider · 22/06/2008 17:48

Organic ingredients, yes that was a dim question

We've got the Panasonic one with the raisin and nut dispensed. Panasonic SD-253. I've had it for about 3 years and use it all the time - we never buy shop bought bread as it has about 10% RDA of salt for just 2 slices. Home made is cheaper and loads nicer.

rookiemater · 22/06/2008 17:50

Another vote for Panasonic. I made a loaf on timer last night so it was hot and fresh this morning. We had 2 visitors and between the for adults and 2yr old DS, we demolished an entire loaf.

Home breadmaker not good for waist watching as bread soo much tastier than shop bought.

We miss out the milk powder too. I ran out once and it made no difference. There are loads of lovely organic flours out there too.

rookiemater · 22/06/2008 17:51

Oh just read pruners message. I didn't know you could do without the milk powder. What difference does it make to the taste without it, do you know ?

iamdingdong · 22/06/2008 18:13

we usually do without milk powder and butter and use olive oil instead, yum!

Ours is getting unreliable (sob) - I liked it because it made 'loaf shaped' loaves - it has 2 paddles- but the only others I've seen look like an identical model under a different brand name- and it hasn't lasted v well. What shape loaves are the panasonic?
