Less foamy laundry detergent?

I live in an area with very soft water and I’m having problems with my washing machine creating too much foam. This didn’t happen with the older machines because they used much more water but the modern ones all use very little. I’ve tried swapping to various different detergents but it’s still a problem. Even using half the recommended amount, it can end up with foam pouring out the drawer of the machine. I even thought maybe it was a problem with the machine itself but the new one is exactly the same. The only thing that solves the problem is adding fabric conditioner which I hate using.

Does anyone know of any detergents that produce less foam?

I’m in the middle of buying a water softener as I live in a very hard water area. The guy that’s going to fit the softener told me to switch to non bio or Fairy washing powder as all the others are created for hard water. I don’t know if this helps as I’ve not had my WS fitted yet. Maybe it’s worth a try OP.

I've got a water softener and this has never happened to me so don't worry too much @GenerousGardener

@Dixie81 can you just put the powder directly into the drum? And maybe reduce the quantity even further?

I never thought to try non-bio. I’ll give that a go!

Definitely put it into the drum.

What about something like soap nuts?

I found putting it in the drum didn’t make any difference. I haven’t tried soap nuts because I’m not sure if they’d be strong enough to get things clean. My clothes get really filthy and even with regular detergent it often needs higher temperatures.

Fairy non bio isn’t v foamy and it’s the best non bio in terms of washing clothes imo

Fairy non bio isn’t foamy.

That’s odd, I live in a soft water area too and never had this!
Laundry sheets are less foamy, or try an eco egg

ButterYellowFlowers · 21/05/2026 19:03

Ecover doesn’t foam at all in mine. I use half a cap.

Dearg · 21/05/2026 19:22

I use Persil or Sainsbury’s own Bio powder for general washing, and Halo liquid ( non bio) for dark and sports clothing.
I am in NE Scotland ; very soft water; use no more than half , sometimes less, of the recommended amount.
My machine is a Bosch.

All that said, I am currently washing polyester fleece dog blankets and they will need an extra rinse.

Personally, I find Fairy to be too foamy and not great at stain removal.

I like the sheet things, and much less packaging to boot. Serious Laundry are good.
