Keeping washing on the line

How can I keep tops on hangers secured to a washing line ?
Recently moved to a windy place from a sheltered garden, & fed up with blouses & shirts ending up on the ground & having to be re-washed.

Hang with pegs not hangers.

And there endeth the thread!

Not sure why you're using hangers, but could you not peg the hangers to the line (and potentially the clothes to the hangers) if you can't peg the clothes directly to the line.

This is what I do sometimes. Especially if I have a lot to dry, I can fit more on the line.

Pegs! You can peg the hangers to the line if you really want to use hangers

iamtryingtobecivil · 29/04/2026 19:47

There is a hanger type thing you can hang on then clip other hangers to that saves loads of space

Ohfudgeoff · 29/04/2026 19:53

Pegs is the obvious answer here.

But also, why are you washing clothing again if it falls off the line? Is your washing line in the middle of a muddy puddle? Just pick the clothes up and give them a little shake...

RampantIvy · 29/04/2026 19:58

It gets quite windy where I live. I just use pegs.

gamerchick · 29/04/2026 20:01

Why are you using hangers? Just peg them out the normal way.

Lovingapeacefulgarden · 29/04/2026 20:03

Lake land do little clips you can hang hangers on outside for drying washing. I use them a lot there handy.

Tequilamockinbird · 29/04/2026 20:04

I use these - they’re brilliant and keep the hangers on the line securely.

Why aren’t you using pegs?

Hang with pegs not hangers.

This. And you hang them upside down, pegs on the seam just above the hem.

imaravenGRONKGRONK · 29/04/2026 20:16

Pegs. Either hang from the hem as @FormerCautiousLurkersays, or hang right way up and pick a spot on the shoulder/sleeve seam to peg.

I use hangers for some clothes to obviate the need for ironing, pegs leave marks. I peg the hangers to the line, I thought everyone did this, but they come off in high winds.

Thanks to those who have recommended gadgets - they obviously like to do as little ironing as me !

I don’t even own an iron now! Tshirts, tops and dresses are all hung on the line on hangers. No peg marks and no ironing needed.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 30/04/2026 23:59

Washing line hanger hooks from Dunelm, they work a treat.

LivingwithHopenowandforever · 01/05/2026 00:12

Peg the hanger at the top to the washing line! I do it to all of our tops we wear out as I do not like peg marks on our clothes especially my Husbands!! I’m a bit OCD……

lightbulbandshade · 01/05/2026 02:20

These are brilliant, great space savers too for a shorter line!

SaintChapelleFan · 03/05/2026 19:49

I also hang all tops/dresses/skirts out on hangers - and peg the hanger to the line to stop it flying off.
The clothes already on hangers means they can be scooped up and straight into wardrobes, not needing to be folded and then left in piles/kicked around kids' bedroom floors if not put away.
I only thought of doing this last year and wondered why I never had before, it is a game-changer in terms of laundry efficiency, kills 3 birds with one stone - saves space on line, dries in a good shape if not being ironed, straight from line to wardrobe so less mess and not-put-away piles everywhere.

mygrandchildrenrock · 03/05/2026 19:53

If your tops have those thin ribbon strips on, just pop those over the hanger. Your tops may slide down the hanger a bit but they won’t fall completely off.

singthing · 03/05/2026 20:13

In the meantime, you can use two hangers, with the hooks opposite each other, so when they go on the line they make a closed loop.

"I thought everyone did this"

Have you never seen other people's washing lines?
I'm 60 and have never seen washing hung out on hangers.
