What do you do with clothes that have been worn but aren’t dirty?

A lot of the clothes in our house don’t get dirty enough to need a wash after one wear but I wouldn’t put them back in with the clean clothes. If I put them in the ironing basket on hang them on the back of the door they need ironing again. It drives me mad as they hang around for a couple days then need washing again as they don’t feel clean enough to wear any more.

Leave them on my bedroom chair

same

pinneddownbytabbies · 21/04/2026 22:00

Bedroom chair (unless one of the cats has decided it is THEIR place to sleep this week), over the radiator in the bathroom, or on a hanger in the spare room doorway. My work clothes get worn 2 days running and then go in the wash.

I put them back in the wardrobe.

localnotail · 22/04/2026 07:31

Wash them on a quick cycle/ low temp. They might not be dirty but they still smell of deodorant/ perfume so need refreshing.

crazycatladie · 22/04/2026 07:32

Hang up on the bedroom door

angelofmydreams1981 · 22/04/2026 07:40

Hoodies get draped over chairs/hung in the coat cupboard or on the banister until I tidy up every day
back in the wardrobe unless I think it’s not clean, I wash everyday so not a problem
back in the day when there was 5 of us… sniff and stash

Sniff and stash 😂 That’s where I’ve been at.

I don't iron so they go in piles on top of a chest in our bedroom, my pile and his pile.

1415isgreat · 22/04/2026 08:01

They live on the banister or are freshened with a febreze antibacterial spray and hung up again. There is no in between.

They are apparently drawn to the nutrients in the stuff you leave on your clothes when you wear them. It would be more convenient for it not to be true as I’d rather put them away. But I’ve never found a different answer looking it up.

Well you learn something new everyday!

Mcvitiesgold · 23/04/2026 02:35

I put them over my upstairs bannister, wasn’t a problem but other family members have lately started doing the same and now they’re pissing me off with the amount of clothes there, but how can I complain! 😩😄

I put them back on the wardrobe. I always have and nothing has ever happened to them. No moths no nothing. If I didn't put them back I would have all my cardigans and jumpers and many pairs of trousers lying all over the place and that would be really silly.

Ophir · 23/04/2026 04:30

I pile them up in clothes purgatory on a chair

whattheysay · 23/04/2026 04:48

I put them in the wardrobe but separately on another shelf. Generally I forget what’s there and end up going through it and just washing it again

clamshell24 · 23/04/2026 06:24

Chair if wearing soon, away if not- I know when things are dirty. In wardrobe if need hanging. Certainly don’t re wash things because they’ve been ‘hanging around’ and ironing is … rare.

CarrieMoonbeams · 23/04/2026 06:35

I mostly wear dresses, and I wear them in the order they're in the wardrobe.

If it doesn't need washed afterwards, it goes to the end of the line so it'll be about a fortnight before it's worn again.

DoAWheelie · 23/04/2026 16:52

I have a 1x2 kallax unit from IKEA as my bedside table, lamp, kindle, phone and drink on the top, a bin in the bottom square and the top square is where I fold clothes I'll wear again.

It's big enough to hold a few items neatly but not so big that I'll put something in there and forget about it. Usually just a pair of jeans, a couple of tops, and my PJs (I wear shorts and a t-shirt as PJs around the house and store them in there overnight or when I go out). The box gets emptied out on washing day so nothing ever festers in there for too long.

Hoodies and cardigans just get hung up as usual rather than kept separate.

Moveoverdarlin · 23/04/2026 16:55

If it’s leggings or jeans or something that is fine for another days wear, I would just put them in the floor ready for the morning. If it was say a more formal top or summer dress, I hang it on my curtain pole, open the window, give it a good air then back in the wardrobe.

italianlondongirl · 23/04/2026 21:13

This thread is blowing my mind!

With the exception of underwear/socks/tights, unless they're obviously dirty, I just put jumpers/dresses/skirts etc back in their respective drawers/wardrobes.

Blouses get two wears and then get put in the wash, but I hang them back up in the interim. I'm forever washing my hands and have a clean house, but this sort of contamination has never crossed my mind

moggerhanger · 23/04/2026 21:17

They are sent to The Chair. DH and I have one each. (They're actually fancy antique dining chairs that I inherited from my mother - we've got bash-around pine chairs in the kitchen, and these antique ones are far too nice to let the kids sit on, so they were deployed in our bedroom.)
