New Tumble Dryer Needed. Any recommendations?

OakCat · 18/04/2026 18:40

My 25 year old condenser tumble dryer has just started smouldering so is now out on the lawn so need another one.

Any recommendations? We tend to just use it for airing/softening things.

Thanks

Don’t get a heat pump one…..they are absolutely useless! 😂 I hate ours, one of the worst decisions ever!

Spanglybangles · 18/04/2026 19:56

I disagree with @snowone as we bought a Hisense heat pump dryer in December and it’s brilliant.

I’ve got a Bosch heat pump one and it’s wonderful! Does a whole load in 1hr 45 mins and doesn’t get the kitchen all steamy plus costs loads less to run

Spanglybangles · 18/04/2026 20:11

I agree. It takes longer than our previous vented dryer, but costs a fraction to run and doesn’t shrink the clothes.

Heat pump all the way . I can fit 2 full loads in mine, for 26p

I bought a Miele heat pump 12 months ago to replace out old basic tumble dryer. Fuel costs have definitely improved with the added bonus that I do less ironing. The clothes do feel damp when they come out but this is normal due to the way it dries the clothes. The old dryer would often permanently crease clothing.
It’s also make because it sends a message to my phone to tell me when it’s finished drying. Just like my DH, who lists all the jobs he’s don, without fail.

We recently got a Hibasense washing machine - it's fab and l had never heard of them

LilacLemur · 18/04/2026 22:36

Another vote for Hisense heat pump. A load of drying costs me 23p and doesn’t wreck clothes like my old one.

LeticiaMorales · 18/04/2026 22:43

I'd just come on to say the same as everyone else - buy a heat pump dryer. It's incredibly economical, no damage or shrinkage to clothing and cuts down ironing. Mine is a Miele.

PeonyBulb · 18/04/2026 22:49

I have a Miele heat pumper dryer and it’s fantastic. Everything dries quickly and dries properly (I reset the factory setting though to the next one up so it’s all bone dry) plus clothes don’t have that overheated feel so clothes aren’t destroyed or damaged. I often press the gentle dry button which helps prevent damage but doesn’t make much difference re timing and I get away with drying pretty much anything in there as nothing gets damaged due to the heat pump. I’d like their model with the steam press function for shirts but most items come out crease free anyway with mine

AEG heat pump. Expensive but has worked well for us and will pay for itself.

I have an AEG and agree with you. It paid for itself inside 2 years, and that was just on power cost, never mind it not spoiling any clothes!

mixingplaydoh · 19/04/2026 07:58

I have a Siemens heat pump - I was persuaded by the man in my local electrical shop, having initially said I wanted another condenser. I’m really pleased with it - much gentler on clothes and less steam in the room.

DeafLeppard · 19/04/2026 08:12

How long do heat pumps take for an average load? We tend to go through all our washing on one day, so a tumble dryer that takes 3+hrs for one load is not going to work. Also ours lives in the garage - I think that’s a problem for heat pumps?

everything In my Miele heat pump takes less than 2 hours even 3 large bath towels.

cantgardenintherain · 19/04/2026 15:58

Its hard to say. They are quite clever, so they start out with a big load in a large machine quoting 3 hours 10 minutes, but as they start to dry they can change down the time quite quickly if they sense that stuff is drying more quickly, which it usually is.

the garden and white vinegar.

Looks like heat pump is the way to go. We have a AEG 7 series washing machine so will look at an equivalent dryer as a few of you have recommended them. Thank you for all your comments. Need to order one ASAP as already getting comments that clothes are crispy!

We do dry outside at weekends on nice days but otherwise on airers inside.

Get one that does a reverse tumble, should help large sheets not get balled up. My Bosch doesn’t have this unfortunately.
