Cleaning hacks that work

It’s the 4am can’t sleep so went downstairs to make tea and thought I’d try Iwan Carrington’s (Sort your life out) cleaning hack of removing the tarnish on the top of the toaster with white wine vinegar, water and a light scrub of tin foil as per a recent episode of the program.

Rather impressed as it worked really well and it’s been bugging me for years that it didn’t look great.

Please share any other tips you might have so that another 4am waiting for the kettle to boil might be put to good use.

I recently used the swirl rice, washing up liquid, vinegar and water in a bottle trick (when the neck is too small for a bottle brush). Had assumed this was rubbish but it worked a treat! I was looking at my toaster yesterday and thinking I needed to try Iwan’s hack!

Wash your shower screen using car wash with a wax included. Makes the glass hydrophobic to reduce water marks.

Just foil and water works on a toaster. You don't need the vinegar.

Wow. Definitely will try this as getting new shower doors soon. Thanks

Clean tarnished silver by putting it in a bowl of soapy water with scrunched up tin foil. The tarnish transfers to the tin foil through the magic of chemistry

I've just done that and it works well. The toaster looks decent again!

Citric acid is absolutely brilliant for limescale. I was so surprised how good it was at descaling my kettle.
I also use it to clean both the washing machine and dishwasher.
I use it instead of conditioner in the washing machine- dissolved in warm water and added to the conditioner tray. I use washing soda and citric acid in a 2:1 ratio a in the washing machine drum as I live in a hard water area. This means I need less detergent.

I bought food grade citric acid in bulk from Amazon as it was cheaper than buying small boxes.

Citric acid can be used for rust removal.

Also I use a dash of rinse aid in a spray bottle for cleaning the shower screen, mirrors and windows for a streak free finish.

If you dilute window cleaning sprays 50/50 with water, they clean just as well, don’t streak, and obviously last twice as long and cost half as much.

Rub a 2p coin over a silvery tap to remove the limescale build up. You don’t need to apply pressure. Amazing.

A swipe of Baby oil to make the chrome bits of your cooker hood shiny.

Use an old toothbrush to clean around the corners where the window meets the frame.
