Ironing help

I’m actually embarrassed to be asking this but…
how the hell do you iron bedding to get a nice crisp finish!
i’ll admit that I only just bought an iron and ironing board recently because I just hate ironing so I gave it up years ago and just used a hand held steamer thing but that’s awful on bedding.
I’ve never been very good at ironing anything, I seem to put in more creases than I take out.
all my bedding is cotton and it’s only a double but I just can’t master it at all!
any tips would be very gratefully received!

I use a steam generator iron

As soon as the bedding is out of the machine it's all pulled into shape , folded twice ( takes two people to pull taught and line up the edges ) and put on airer to dry. Dont let it over dry , then iron on hot, loads of steam whilst smoothing it out

Then folding again into three and into the airing cupboard

The higher the thread , the more steam required I find.

I don’t bother!
I’m on the wrong board I know…hangs head in shame and slinks away.

@suki1964thank you, I’ll try that out. I just ironed pillow cases and they still look…well rubbish!

@Okayliethat was my previous way of doing things but my new bedding just looks awful it’s crumpled from being washed and dried, then extra crumpled from sleeping on it. I might just take it to my mum and get her involved 😂 I’m 43 though, I should be able to do this!

@donotmissyourchancetoblow the more its washed and used, the easier it becomes to iron

When my FIL died 30 years ago, he left us a wee inheritance ( tiny ) and we bought a good bed and bedding - Im still using one of the duvet sets . Gone through two mattresses since but the bedding is still going :)

Ironing/steam ironing once on the bed is an option to finish it.

or do what I do and send it out to somebody to do for me.

golddiamond · 08/04/2026 08:18

I haven’t ironed for decades. Honestly, give it up, it’s endless.

DinoLil · 08/04/2026 08:22

Sorry, what is ironing exactly?!

Runnermumof2 · 08/04/2026 09:22

Use spray starch or spray anti wrinkle and then a handheld clothing steamer is my method.
I did used to fully iron bedding when I worked in a bedding store as a teenager, but that was for display purposes only. I'd never do it for my own home .

MagpiePi · 08/04/2026 09:25

Why bother if it is going to be crumpled as soon as you get into bed?

Weeelokthen · 08/04/2026 09:28

My dp does all ironing but he doesn't do bed sheets because he doesn't need to. It's all in the folding whilst drying and he is the master of the fold 😂

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 08/04/2026 11:35

It’s the pillows that drive me mad. I don’t sleep on the ones that match the duvet cover but they just look terrible when the bed is made and they’re all crumpled!
i also don’t actually make the bed properly I fold it back to air and leave it like that until I get back in so it’s only really 2 pillow cases I want to look better!
I do realise I sound like a lunatic it’s just something that’s always bothered me!
I’ll try ironing them when they’re not fully dry. I do think they need washed and used a bit more as despite being 100%cotton with a decent thread count they still feel a bit stiff. Not like my old set that was so old but so soft it actually didn’t need ironing at all especially after being dried outside!
the majority of my clothes don’t need ironed if it looks like it will crease easily I just don’t buy it and I rely on body heat to smooth out some tops because I just can’t get a smooth finish despite my best efforts!
