Powder vs gel vs liquid

I seem to be going through a hell of a lot of gel for the washing. Am I the only one who thinks the quantity looks less? Same for liquid, bottles never seem full anymore. I seem to go through a hell of a lot and Im constantly buying it. Thinking of switching to powder but I find clothes smell better and are softer with gels and liquids. However, I guess powder if more economical. Any thoughts???

I use Aldi own brand liquid and add a cap of Dettol laundry sanitizer. Wash most things at 30 degrees, my laundry is definitely clean and smells fresh. Also never need to clean the drawer because the Dettol keeps it clean.

I too buy the largest pack of powder and half the dose (half a tea cup). I also use white vinegar instead of conditioner (about half a tea cup as well - it doesnt smell)
i also use the vinegar instead of conditioner the dishwasher instead of the blue liquid. Works perfectly well and is cheap as chips.
i buy my vinegar on amazon in 5l bottle. I transfer it into a dishwasher liquid bottle that i had saved and use a big squirt when i do a lod of laundry or i fill up the liquid dispenser in the dishwasher.
i also use the white vinegar to clean the windows (mixed with lots of water)
it is ecological and economical

I use powder but the current box has gone all solid at the bottom which is a pain. Does anyone have any advice on whether a different brand might be better (I’m using Fairy) or could it be how I’m storing it?

It must have become damp at the bottom of the box at some point.

I am sure it won't affect the use. Can you get a knife and whack it into chucks? 😀You can put them all into a container with a lid and shake the bejeezus out of it to unclump it again.

Or just whack a chunk into the machine. It will dissolve.

We don't get those big boxes so I cannot comment on those, but we get bags and I do decant a bag into a plastic container which has a screw on lid. It was a freebie they were giving away years ago. I have a few and just fill those up with the two different powders I use with a label on the outside of which is which.

Sheets here too. Also brilliant when travelling and I want to do a quick hand wash. Away for a month in May and no way I'm packing 30 pairs of knickers!

I think I’ll start storing the box inside a plastic storage box and yes you’re right about breaking up the powder with a knife. Thank you ☺️

How much white vinegar do you use?

A squirt, which is probably 25ml? In the fabric conditioner drawer.

Thank you. I’ve been wanting to give this a go.

I use the sheets that dissolve and are better for you anyway - they seem to last longer

Oooh, what cutting edge technology is this??

dementedpixie · 08/04/2026 16:00

@HotGazpacho I know you can get the dr beckmann ones in the supermarket

I was going to try those but they're sold in plastic packaging for no apparently good reason. I'm trialling different brands at the moment. The Ocean Saver ones seem to be doing a good job so far.

@DuchessofStaffordshire @dementedpixie Thanks both! I’m still getting over the thrill of putting the powder in the drum, a sheet might just finish me off.

We use Daz, 3 in our house with pets and we go through a lot of washing. We buy an 80 wash box for around £9 at Iceland once every 3 months, we used to get 2 months out of it but started using less powder (could still probably use less) and our clothes are still clean and fresh. Used to use liquid but we were buying it monthly, it is more expensive and our clothes didn’t smell as fresh.
