Cleaning velvet sofa after urine accident - what is clean enough to be safe?

I have a 2 seater velvet sofa. Covers don’t come off. Sponge clean only.

A couple of weeks ago, a very inebriated person (not me!) fell asleep on this sofa and wet themselves. Whys and wherefores and sorting this out on a personal level in hand - but I'm left with the practical cleaning situation which I'm hoping for some advice on. The seats were very wet. When I lifted the seats up, they were wet on the bottom too and underneath – I don’t know how much the urine soaked through the foam pad itself and how much it going underneath was due to it running in between the 2 seats and soaking into the bottom layer that way.

I have gone about trying to clean them the best I could, but I’m worried that I haven’t done enough to sanitise them (time on Dr Google tells me that urine is NOT sterile!!)

These are the steps I’ve taken so far

As the seats were so wet, I thought I should put next to a dehumidifier on laundry mode to get the moisture out so I wouldn’t be dealing with mould as well as urine

After this, I put the seats outdoors a couple of days in a row.

When the urine was wet, it did not have a smell. Faint smell after drying with dehumidifier which went after airing.

A few days later, I hoovered the seats and steamed them with a garment steamer for a substantial amount of time hoping to kill any germs. When they were steaming there was a slight smell of urine. I then wiped them down on each side with a microfibre cloth that had been soaked in half water, half vinegar and a squirt of washing up liquid, wiping with clean water 15 mins later. I put them outdoors to dry and air.

Once dry, I could not smell the urine

A few days later, I wiped them down again with clean water with a squirt of washing up liquid and left them outside to air. Still didn’t smell.

Today I thought I’d hoover them again and give another steam to ensure properly sanitised.– HOWEVER, as I steamed them, I could again smell the urine which is making me wonder whether I have killed all the harmful bacteria.

They are now airing outdoors airing. I’m hoping the air will stop the smell like it did before, but I’m worried I’ve not done enough. If the smell goes again in the fresh air, I’m pretty sure that another steaming would again reveal a smell that's hidden the rest of the time.

I’ve tried to find out whether I can buy new seat pads for the sofa separately, but I can’t (despite it being from a flat pack company!)

Have I done enough?I do suffer from OCD with contamination themes (diagnosed), which is not helping!

Thanks

They'll be fine. You've done enough.

You could try a dry cleaners, but I’d leave them out in the garden as much as possible and they’ll be done. Any smell will fade eventually.

I wouldn’t worry too much about bacteria- no urine isn’t sterile but it doesn’t have harmful bacteria in the same way faeces does.

I would be more concerned about the smell, but fresh air and vinegar should sort that. If it doesn’t you could try sprinkling on bicarbonate of soda overnight and then vacuuming, or a pet urine odour remover

Dry sodium bicarbonate powder on it. Absorbs odours

Make the dirty fucker who pissed on it pay for a professional clean.

"I do suffer from OCD with contamination themes"

I started wondering this after the 3rd or 4th time you mentioned you tried cleaning the cushions. I thought it was either OCD or you were at an Air B&B/renting and were worried about being fined.

Does it make you feel better to know 99% of people wouldn't have gone to quite the efforts you did?

Also, how is stale urine harmful (you said it's harmful)?

Think how many parents have to clean up their kids' urine each year...! I can't imagine everybody is doing it perfectly and we don't have an epidemic of kids getting ill from it.

I've cleaned it off the sofa, the carpet, their mattresses.. all after accidents (Not all recently, within the last 6 years). I can't say I've ever done it PERFECTLY (though I've tried my best, I also steam it where possible, etc).

Thanks for the replies

I think part of the reason I'm feeling a bit twitchy about this was the sheer amount of urine involved combined with the fact that the covers don't come off the sofa seats and they're velvet. Care instructions are to sponge clean

Back in the days of having small children I had more sensible choices of sofas with removable machine washable covers. Now they've left home, I thought I was now safe to have something less practical!

My main concern is whether the sofa is covered in bacteria. Airing seems to get rid of the smell, but steaming seems to reactivate the smell, making me think I've not cleaned it properly and killed the germs.

As I said before, the whys and wherefores of how this situation came about are in hand and being dealt with - is a difficult and complex situation and no one is in a position to pay for a professional clean (including me!)

I do still have a bit of a tide mark on the sofa seats and there is still a slight smell (I think I may have made that worse when I did the second steaming!) Why did I buy a velvet sofa with non removable covers!
