Seems a shed load of money - Is it worth paying that much or not?!

Pans in need of replacing so just considering the options really...

has anyone pointed out the obvious yet? Yes they look lovely but once they have anything int hem they are too bloody heavy to lift without getting a hernia.

tassisssss · 17/06/2008 14:36

I have 2 casseroles - an oval one and a bigger round one - and use them a lot. One was a wedding present (10 years ago) and one I saw in a sale reduced to about £20. They are great!

There are some fab new colours too!

IKEA has its own version which is a fraction of the price and apparently very good.

SheherazadetheGoat · 17/06/2008 14:37

they are known in our house as 'the vulgarity' as bil declared them vulgar.

scatterbrain · 17/06/2008 14:37

They are certainly heavy when full - often needs both hands/arms to carry them - but I quite like that - it feels solid and substantial ! Good arm exercise too !

expatinscotland · 17/06/2008 14:39

tas, hijack! are you in S.A.? if you were an S. Afican in rural W. Scotland, what would be your fondest wish? dd1's nursery teacher is from capetown, married to a scotsman, and i need a REALLY good end of term pressie for her.

i'm getting a le crueset casserole, dammit.

Kewcumber · 17/06/2008 14:40

I thought perhaps you just put the Le Creuet pot full/cooked on the hob and all stand around eating out of it rather than try to shift it.

TheBlonde · 17/06/2008 14:40

I have 2 of the casseroles, they are heavy but lovely
I wouldn't go for the saucepans due to the weight

ScottishMummy · 17/06/2008 14:40

yes damn fine items last forever indestuctible

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 17/06/2008 14:41

I love cooking a 'hearty' casserole in my 28" one, I feel like a witch with a cauldron

Kewcumber · 17/06/2008 14:41

Expat - I can post you some biltong for her if you like!

expatinscotland · 17/06/2008 14:41

c'mon, kew! think of it as strength training.

MrsSprat · 17/06/2008 14:41

I love the Marmitout - the lid is a frying pan, how cool is that? A great first foray into the world of the Creuset

expatinscotland · 17/06/2008 14:42

what is biltong? i have till 26 june, kew!

i really like her accent! it's lovely. and the way she still counts the children in Afrikaans.

Kewcumber · 17/06/2008 14:42

fuck me £71 for a frying pan

expatinscotland · 17/06/2008 14:43

oh, no, i only think the casseroles are worth it, going from hob to oven. we have a chasseur grill pan i'm about to freecycle, it gets so little use.

Kewcumber · 17/06/2008 14:43

its dead animal expat generally seems popular with african expats here. Think our local butcher sells it.

warthog · 17/06/2008 14:44

yummm i'd love someone to send me some biltong...

don't think you can eat it if you're pg tho.

expatinscotland · 17/06/2008 14:46

oh yuk!

no one really EATS that?!

WendyWeber · 17/06/2008 14:47

"The meat became stable against decay or attack by insects within a day or two and within a fortnight would be black and rock-hard."

yummy

warthog · 17/06/2008 14:48

you haven't lived til you've tried it.

Paddlechick666 · 17/06/2008 14:48

My brother will be 44 in December and my mother still has a Le Crueset casserole which she bought just before he was born.

It certainly doesn't look 44 years old and the only real issue with it was when she dropped the lid and took a big chunk out of her ceramic kitchen floor tiles.

Personally I would go for a slow cooker over a Le Crueset but then I am in lurve with slow cookers!

MrsSprat · 17/06/2008 14:48

Not just a humble frying pan, it's a hob top pot and oven casserole. Three pans in one. Had mine for ten years, gets used at least once a week - 13p a week for 3 pans.

WendyWeber · 17/06/2008 14:49

Thanks, warthog - I think I'll stay dead

Paddlechick666 · 17/06/2008 14:51

expat, my mother's is the tacky orange version altho not sure of the diameter.

i think she has a frying pan and a saucepan too but they were bought later when le crueset all got a bit trendy and aren't used nearly so much.
