Help me rescue a white blouse

I wore a white blouse recently, its cotton, really nice from La Redoute some years ago and I wont find the same thing again

While I was out and about, I was really cold so bought a red scarf from some cheapy shop and wrapped it round my arms, not my neck

Got back from holiday to find that the arms of the blouse are pinky, I didnt notice while I was away

So its been waiting to be washed because Im not sure what to do with it. Im worried it will spread to the rest of the top and that the arms have been dyed.

This sort of thing is always happening to me and items of clothing just sit about while I try to find a solution!!

Edited because I didnt finish my post!!

So how to solve this, shall I put it in the wash with a colour catcher?

The last time this happened to me with a white cotton/linen shirt, I soaked it forever in bicarb, used vanish, used colour catchers etc etc, nothing, did not shift the red dye that had come out of some gloves on the cuffs.

Diluted bleach. Follow the instructions on the container.

If it is 100% cotton and you follow the instructions, it'll be fine.

Sodium PERcarbonate is all you need. not bicarbonate.

Imtoooldforallthis · 09/03/2026 11:44

If all else fails you could dye it

I’d soak in Ace gentle bleach

Blueskiesnotgrey · 09/03/2026 12:42

ACE Bleach for whites will sort this no drama.

AlbieJiggered · 09/03/2026 12:51

@likelysuspect , put simply, sodium bicarbonate is NaHCO3,
sodium percarbonate is 2Na2CO33H2O2.
The Na2CO3 is washing soda, the H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide.

this is the smallest from this company, I'm sure you will find it elsewhere though.
I also use it for cleaning the loos. I use it when I wash denim and all our sheets so buy the 2.5kg bag.

Just yesterday I rescued a white cotton(with floral print) quilt cover and vest from shocking pink hair dye stains.
I soaked just the affected areas of the quilt cover, in Ace in a small bowl for a couple of hours. Then into a long cool wash with powder and a scoop of Vanish oxi action.
I was amazed to get it all out actually,

GellerYeller · 09/03/2026 12:57

Just a colour catcher won’t work in my experience, they’re not for removing stains- I think they just prevent colour transfer during the washing cycle.

changedusername190 · 09/03/2026 13:02

wash it in the machine with vanish, detergent,a colour catcher and napisan!

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 09/03/2026 13:13

Ace laundry bleach. I died white bedding with dark pj’s waited for a sunny day and washed it with the laundry bleach then hung it in the sun. It’s as good as new

likelysuspect · 09/03/2026 13:36

Im going to try the Ace then.

Im still sitting here with the blouse that I need to rescue

Before I go out and buy the Ace, which isnt cheap, I found in the cupboard Dylon Brilliant White Repair - with Oxi Stain remover

it says on the packet it contains sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate and 30% oxygen bleaching agents

Does anyone know if this is the type of sodium I need for the blouse?

Its in sachets and you put it in the wash with the item

I'd soak it in vanish oxy action powder, then put it through a machine wash with a scoop of the same powder in

Milton baby sterilising fluid!!!! Just mix a good amount with water and soak for a few hours/ overnight if tough stains. It works for all my preschoolers white school shirts! And is very cost effective 🙂

likelysuspect · 20/03/2026 14:33

I have found some Milton in the cupboard. It says it expired in 2017.

Is that a thing? Do cleaning products expire?

OP posts:
GellerYeller · 20/03/2026 20:34

It’s probably fine for cleaning clothes but not for it’s original purpose, which is sterilising baby items.
Maybe they can’t guarantee it being a steriliser after expiry.

likelysuspect · 25/03/2026 11:05

Just giving an update about this, the opened bottle of Milton (expiry 2017) didnt smell of bleach one bit and after soaking for a while the arms were still pink

I had another bottle (expiry 2017 - must have gone on a Milton buying spree that year) which hadnt been opened. That smelt of bleach a bit so I used some of that, it took ages but the arms are ok I then washed it and its ok

Just in case anyone else has the same problems.
