Recycling changes - kitchen bins

My area is one of the ones that has only had general waste and general recycling up until this point. We're due to be switching to a 5 bin system in June, of which I'll need room for 4 inside: food waste, general waste, plastics + glass + metal, and paper and cardboard.

I don't have the cupboard space for built in bins - my kitchen is jolly small and at the moment I already have quite an inconvenient set up: I have a big recycling bin and a little general waste bin, plus a box for glass, plus soft plastics hanging round til I take them to the co-op to get rid of them. I am keen to improve on this once the new system comes in!

I'm trying to work out what the best option is, because I don't really want lots of bins hanging around, or to be resorting recycling before it goes to the wheelie bin. I don't think I'll need much room for general waste as I can't think of much at all that isn't covered by the recycling categories, but I don't think I can have no bin at all for that, and I can't see anything that's a 4 compartment bin at the moment.

I would be very grateful to know what solutions other people have found to the many bin problem!

Have one bin for recycling in the house and sort it outside into the correct places when it’s full - apart from food - that needs to be separate!

We've got one of these which has three compartments and we use one for general waste, one for paper and cardboard, and one for plastic and metals: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0857BD3PD?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_0_0&th=1

Our glass goes out in a separate box but we don't have a lot of glass waste so items just sit by the backdoor until someone goes out to the box. Our food waste caddy was provided by the council and it hangs on little hooks inside the door of the under sink cupboard.

Cardboard bin in the utility room.
General waste in one under counter kitchen bin and glass, tins, plastic etc in another.
I won’t be using our new food caddy, it’s just been delivered. I put it straight in the garage and will use it for tool storage. Wasted food will continue to go in bagged up with general waste.

Why aren't you going to use it?

Why aren't you going to use it?

I don’t want rotten food sitting around, in or outside. We live surrounded by fields.
Nowhere convenient to put the bin. Looks unsightly.
Too much faff for not enough benefit IMO. We had this scheme in our area years ago. It was scrapped.
A city council worker on a local forum said to return the new bins if they weren’t going to be used. When asked how to return them, he couldn’t answer.

We’re due to have this system soon
we Currently take glass to the bottle bank and soft plastics to the supermarket and I hope this change doesn’t mean that these facilities will no longer be available

Thanks everyone, loads of really useful ideas! I reckon the 4 section Addis bin suggested by @TheTwenties might be the answer I'm looking for :) really appreciate all the thoughts from everybody who has already had this change!

food waste biN lives on side - I bought a Joseph Joseph one and then I take the bag out to the big one out the front when full.

i have a 2 split main bin - general waste and paper / card. Take outside when full.

plastic / glass / cans etc. this box sits outside my back door so just chuck stuff in - carry it out to the front in bin day.

We are having this change coming in June as well. Currently we have one large recycling bin (which needs replacing anyway but I've been waiting for the new chnages). I was thinking g of replacing it with something like those stackable bins.

My only concern with our new system is glass (which we currently have to.take to the recycling ourselves) is going to be going into a wheel bin with plastic. How do you not end up with broken glass in this bin? I'm slightly concerned well end up.with broken glass in the bottom of the recycling bin.

Why does broken glass matter? It's just upended into the lorry by a machine. Gone are the days when you had to wrap up broken glass & leave it separately.

The only problem with multi section bins is that each section is really small and will need to be emptied more often
