DD has too many toys, does anyone have any advice on how to decide what to keep?

dd has just had her birthday and i've just been tidying her room and frankly she has more toys than she knows what to do with. How do I decide what she should keep? She does have enought room to keep all of it but tbh she doesn't play with much of it and it needs cutting back IMO(and dh's)

I could ask her to help decide but she's only 4 so generally wants to keep everything. I am a horder by nature, although am getting better, so not great with clearing out things. I have a ds so could keep some things for him but a lot of it is girly

Or do i just make the storage better so it's all kept but in a better way

take all the stuff out that you THINK She doesnt play with

keep it in the attic and see if she notices

attic is a good idea, will get dh to save boxes from work and do that.

I recently went throug all her teddies and ended up with 2 black sack full which i freecycled. don't even know where they came from, tis maddness!

thanks

soft toys are such a waste of money after the first two. We have hundreds, that never get played with. Am going to free cycle them apart from the faves.

Oliveoil · 16/06/2008 14:07

we have a clear out every now and again

anything broken - get rid
anything that you don't like (!) - get rid
anything that causes fights and arguements - get rid

tbh we keep most of our stuff and I rotate the toy boxes around so they play with everything

we have about a million soft toys and I have to squish them all in a sleeping bag and shout TOY MOUNTAIN and tip them over dd1 and dd2. It is funny once, but not when you have to do it over and over and over again...

definatley agree with chucking anything broken or that I don't like! I think i'm going to do the rotate thing, accept i doubt i'll remember to rotate them so probably they'll just get boxed and then in 5 years i'll find the boxes and think 'oh yes'

dh gonna save boxes for me so will begin mission declutter at some point soon!

pmsl - read the thread title and so knew it was going to be you

I am coming round one morning when the dd's are at preschool and going to make you be ruthless!!!

Eddas · 16/06/2008 14:15

it's alright i'll do it by myself or else you'll chuck out too much for me to handle!!

(or get dh to build a huge extension for all the toys!!)

Eddas · 16/06/2008 14:20

in my huge garden

dd doesn't have as much as your 2 i just need to organise better i think and rotate so she plays with things rather than moaning she's bored all the time!

I think I've just solved my toy-and-heating-bill problems in one.

Insulate loft with soft toys. Job done!

good idea puss

the rotating thing works - E loves playing with the baby doll stuff (bottles etc) at the mo but they are hidden at back of cupboard so she cant get them out unless I pull the box (or your G is round as she manages to pull the box out - must be more determined stronger than E )

Eddas · 16/06/2008 15:41

i've just tided ds' room and sorted a few toys that are a bit young for him now, even though he's only 15 months! and sorted his clothes as he's finally in the bigger size(12-18)

mine and dh's room now looks like a dumping ground though since i have all manner of childrens outgronw clothes in there. I will be putting it all on mn/freecycle/ebay today though. it needs to go.

eandh, its funny how they do odd things, like e gets stuff out at ours that g doesn't and vice versa mind you they get most things out whichever house we're in
