First instance I'd use thick bleach and a toothbrush. Get in there and give it a good scrub. You might need to re silicone the bath, but bleach might be able to get it all off.

HG black mold spray from B&Q is really good. I would give that a go and scrub. For the silicone I would take it off and redo it. Resealing is a good start in case the seal has gone.

I have tried the HG spray and it hasn’t shifted it. I’ll keep trying and see if it works. What’s the best sort of brush to use? Thank you ☺️

Mould magic or thick bleach on kitchen or toilet roll, soak & leave overnight. I use an old electric toothbrush in the grout lines with bleach (& wear goggles)!

SleepingisanArt · 18/02/2026 15:37

OP - spray on the HG stuff and leave the bathroom! If you can leave it at least 2 hours. Then scrub the grout with a toothbrush and rinse. (Did this in a bathroom which was a lot worse than your pictures - not mine I must say- and it worked a treat.) If that doesn't work you can sand the grout and then apply a new coat over the top - it comes in tubes just for this purpose! Mould in sealant is almost impossible to remove as it eats into the sealant so is resistant to surface treatment. You need to remove it, clean your surface thoroughly and then apply new sealant as a PP said. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I will have another go… we also have mould in our bedroom on the back of some wallpaper and on the wall by the window-delightful! I am getting someone to look at what could be causing it and we’re having the paper stripped and room painted in April but in the meantime would it be sensible to get rid of the offending wallpaper and clean the wall with bleach and warm water?

Use a proper mould cleaner like hg or kill rock, wear a mask and n95 mask. Mould is very toxic!

@CherryRipe1 thank you I’m worried about the effect on my health sleeping in there but hopefully we’ll have it sorted in the next couple of months

We had exactly the same thing! There was a slight occasional leak at the roof tiles, flashing & parapet wall junction near the front window so in heavy deluges, the water ingress was seeping down the wall behind the wardrobe. I noticed the lining paper had all started to peel off & mould forming. We stripped the paper off first treated the mould then redid it and redecorated after the roofer had fixed the problem. We slept out of the bedroom. I noticed my partner's asthma improved after this.

Allloveisbeautiful · 19/02/2026 12:12

@CherryRipe1 how did you strip the paper off and treat the mould?

Also does having an extractor fan help with preventing build up of mould in the bathroom? We don’t have one so I will get one but only if they are actually effective!

Wow that's quite extensive but ours was more at the top down & the coving got water stained too. Our wallpaper just sort of fell or peeled off, but the stubborn bits I used a handheld steamer with the wide flat attachment, wore a n95 mask goggles and gloves & kept the window open. Is that an outside wall, front/side near a window or adjoining another property? Is it downstairs or upstairs near the roof. Is there a water source behind it like a bathroom/shower, central heating pipe? Need a diagram! I'm trying to remember the mould spray used, could have been hagesan (sp) hg, kilrock. Whatever it was it was quite effective. Go for something more professional than the usual stuff in the supermarkets. We got one of those huge rolls of blue paper & bagged it up afterwards. I'm trying to remember if we treated it with some kind of anti mould paint or primer afterwards, might have been zinsser B.I.N.

Definitely! It's a must & run a dehumidifier as well if you can. Try not to dry washing in there & squeegee down the shower or use a window vac after showering or bathing.

I can no longer bend down to scrub grout with a toothbrush. So I was delighted to discover that Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover makes black mould vanish and leaves grout white and clean looking. The spray bottle says to spray, wait and wipe, without any scrubbing required.
I've found that if I spray it onto the grout and leave it to sit overnight all traces of the black mould have vanished and the grout looks pristine.

In the end what finally solved the ever increasing mould and mildew problem was using a dehumidifier. When I first switched it on the humidity in my bedroom was 78%, and I had to empty the four litre water tank in the dehumidifier at least once a day until all the excess moisture had been removed from the bedding, curtains and clothing as well as the air.

I originally got the dehumidifier to dry things like duvets and pillows in the bathroom so I wasn't limited to only being able to was them during heatwaves. It turned out to be a lot more useful than I expected. The one I got has a "smart" setting, so it switches itself to standby once the humidity is down to 50% so I can leave it switched on without worrying about the electricity bill. Now that the damp problem has been solved the dehumidifier can go for a week before the 4L tank needs emptying, and my house doesn't smell fusty when I come home from a walk.

Spray white vinegar on mould, bleach removes the stain but you need vinegar to kill the spores. The smell doesn’t last!

Allloveisbeautiful · 19/02/2026 18:13

@CherryRipe1 what was the handheld steamer you used?

Anything like this off eBay or Amazon but make sure it has the highlighted tool. If it's a very big area you'll need a proper wallpaper stripper.

If you do this DO NOT DO IT AT THE SAME TIME, make sure the area is wiped clean of one with water before you attempt the other. Bleach and vinegar creates chlorine gas!!!

@MrsBroccolini thank you!
