Please help save my sink

We got an amazing new kitchen 18 months ago but the sink is really stressing me out. It is already so stained and not sure it is salvageable.

I have been using Cif Cream with a brush, it helps somewhat with the majority but then it always comes back and there are now some stained areas that remain so no matter what I do. I also wonder whether the brush may have damaged the surface so it is getting even worse? I am not sure.

Please please tell me this is salvageable somehow!

I've had three composite sinks: blue, black and white, they always get stained. Eventually the resin breaks down and scratches and gets discoloured. Ceramic or stainless steel are harder and less absorbent and can be bleached clean and polished.

Ooh , I have a resin composite sink , champagne coloured . I only keep it because it is huge .

It grabs every coffee or tomato sauce or ketchup stain going .
I use bleach which makes it cleaner but it still needs a physical scrub.

I've got one of those rechargeable cleaning brushes and I've found a bottle of BKF in the back of my cupboard (originally bought for cleaning the radiator in the bathroom).

I will persuade DS to clean the sink .

you could try rubbing with half a lemon. It used to work on the enamel bath we had back in the day. Otherwise I would try diluted milton overnight as suggested by pp. i use that on my white dishcloths, its less harsh than bleach and brings them up nicely .

Which one do you use, there's several?

The OG one

Blue silver and white

I always just use bleach. The stains aren’t “coming back” it’s just getting stained again because food and drink will obviously still go in the sink.

Justmuddlingalong · 20/02/2026 18:48

Barkeepers friend POWDER, not the cream, which is useless.
Sprinkle a decent amount of the powder into the sink, wipe into a paste with a quite damp cloth all over, leave it for about half an hour, wipe thoroughly and rinse off.

GreyhoundLurcher · 20/02/2026 19:12

Bleach is your friend!

Gothamcity · 20/02/2026 20:03

We have a white composite sink and have to bleach it weekly. It always shocks me how it looks brand new again after a dousing in thick bleach! Even what I thought were scratches in it once came off with bleach.

gamerchick · 20/02/2026 20:08

Magic sponge. Why do people go on about abrasive chemicals when 9/10 you just need a magic sponge?!

ARunnerwithNoShoes · 20/02/2026 20:20

Ohhh interesting mix of opinions. It is composite so not sure what to do now! I think I'll try Bar Keepers Friend first. If it doesn't work I'll try Milton and if all else fails I'll try a little bit of bleach.

DH is tea obsessed, not to blame him, but i'm pretty sure it's from the endless cups of tea and strainers being cleaned in the sink 😶

This gives me hope!

@SkipAd mines an ikea pot butlers sink, had it for about 14 years, clean it every day just with washing up liquid and if looking stained around the plug use spray bleach. Still looks gleaming white. Son has black kind of plastic, not sure if that is composite, but it's dreadful, permanently stained when he bought the house from what looks like tea, bleach doesn't help at all.

Cheekily jumping on your thread OP. I am just about to get a new kitchen sink, which material do people think stays cleanest? I have googled and am so torn, thanks

Stainless steel is bomb proof. I’ve just replaced a 20 year old stainless steel sink that looked immaculate, with another one.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 21/02/2026 21:22

I have a white composite sink that I bleach regularly.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/02/2026 21:22

I’ve got a white ceramic sink, I use Nanna’s Secret Paste to keep it clean. Mine is 4 years old and it’s immaculate

Youspurnme · 21/02/2026 22:08

I had that exact sink in my old house, the Pink Stuff was amazing, it came up like new

Franjipanl8r · 23/02/2026 21:47

Bleach or Milton tablet in a shallow sink of water and soak. We live in a very hard water area so I have to de-scale our white sink sometimes as often the stains are discoloured limescale marks.

ARunnerwithNoShoes · 23/02/2026 21:49

I have just tried Bar Keepers Friend and while using it I thought it was amazing!

But now I've taken a picture to show you guys, i think it looks the same as before. 🤔I think it may just be the lighting as IRL to the naked eye I am very chuffed with the result! Perhaps I am deluded!

There were some rust spots from the draining board whIch just magically vanished with a wipe (I usually have to scrub like a maniac and it is still not 100%) which I was pleased about. Might have to try mixing it into a paste, I only tried the powder on cloth method so far.
