Grubby toilet bowl

Hello,
Our toilet bowl has recently become very off-white and dull, almost grey, and I can’t work out why. We’ve had the same toilet for about 18 years and it’s always stayed bright white until now.
The only change I can think of is that we started using a lemon-scented disinfectant a few months ago, so I’m wondering whether that could be causing it.
Has anyone experienced something similar? And is there any way to restore the white finish?
Thanks.

Did you replace a bleach cleaner with the disinfectant?

BadActors · 07/02/2026 14:59

Hi @rockingroller, I did, or at least I have used bleach in the past but not every time I cleaned the toilet

Using bleach every week or so would keep it white. If you've stopped completely, that could explain the discolouration.

Thanks @rockingroller, I have used bleach since the discolouration but it doesn't seem to have done much. I'll try a really strong bleach and see what happens (melts toilet).
Thanks

Put a bit of washing up liquid down the toilet flush and clean it should help. Then go back to bleach.

BadActors · 07/02/2026 15:24

Thanks @Coffeeishot, I'll try that

Put a large handful of sodium percarbonate (not bicarbonate) in, whit the lid and leave for an hour or two. Magic!

I was going to say denture cleaning tablet - this is what’s in them! I keep a tube of them to chuck down the loo occasionally. Magic.

Thank you! Have ordered the Sodium Percarbonate.

Any chance it may have a build up of limescale? I have a house in a hard water area and that gets dirty looking very quickly without regular limescale remover. Even in areas with softer water, a small amount of limescale can build up and it holds on to any staining so I would put most of a bottle of black harpic or similar down the loo for a night and see if it clears while you are waiting for the stuff above to arrive.
