Do the dryer balls stop washing thing itself in knots?

Just put my king size duvet cover in the dryer. After the time I went to take it out only to find it tied in a knot and still wet. It keeps happening and it is annoying. Makes no difference whether it is in on its own or with towels and pillow cases. I am wondering whether those spiky dryer balls would help.

No. They make no difference whatsoever and they make a horrendous noise when the drum is cold. Most disappointing purchase I've ever made!

Exactly the same experience as @MrsLizzieDarcy. They just get tied into things or stuck in sleeves.

Seconded! Pointless, noisy things. Don’t bother.

I agree with others really loud and make no difference i don't use mine anymore

TheHillIsMine · 26/01/2026 22:22

Fabulous. Saved me money, thanks.

If you could solve the problem of the washing tying itself up so not drying I'd be very happy!

My king size duvet cover does this if I don’t fasten it to wash at the bottom, can you try doing the buttons up if you haven’t?

LittleGreenDragons · 27/01/2026 14:08

I've stopped using the spiky plastic balls as it sounded horrendous but I've since found out you can buy wool balls which are a lot softer and therefore kinder to your clothes as well as the drum. I might try it with that instead.

Jamfirstest · 27/01/2026 14:11

No. Do the buttons back up on the quilt cover before you wash it. No one in my house is allowed to wash it undone it’s too much effort. Also the DDs tights have to go in zip up laundry nets so they don’t tie anything in knots. They put their dirty tights straight in the bag and I hand the bag back to them. They were a few quid on Amazon well worth it.

That is what we do too. Not fool proof but works most of the time

LowdermilkPark · 27/01/2026 14:14

We’ve tried the balls - pointless.

We always do up the buttons but bedding goes into a wet ball. Our old dryer never did this. The new one rotates in one direction only, which is the culprit.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 27/01/2026 14:20

No. They just get stuck in the duvet cover!

Changename12 · 27/01/2026 14:37

Thanks for this thread. You have stopped me buying dryer balls as I have this problem too. I always do up the buttons on the duvet cover but still everything seems to make a ball. My current solution is to open up the tumble dryer mid cycle , tip all the stuff into a washing basket, straighten it out ad then put it back in. This also speeds up the process as a lot of steam is released into the air.

prampushingdownthehighst · 27/01/2026 14:42

This works for me....
Put a dry smallish bath sheet/towel in with the bedding

BertieBotts · 27/01/2026 14:48

King size duvet cover is the only thing that does this for me, so I no longer put it in the dryer, I hang it over the bannister (over a door in our last house because it was a flat). Once it twisted itself so tightly it took DH about 30 minutes to undo it.

Eventually I gave up and bought 2x extra large singles from ikea and I no longer have to wash the king size duvet cover at all!

One idea I did hear is to scrunch the wet duvet cover into a long thin shape and then tie it roughly into a knot in itself, it helps stop it from eating everything else and because it's only knotted loosely, it will still dry.

Dryer balls stop polyester things from getting all staticy but don't seem to do much apart from that.

WinterFrogs · 27/01/2026 14:59

It happens to mine too, even with the buttons done up. I now put it in on it's own and take it out and give it a shake every 15 min or so. It's very annoying and only happens with the winter thick brushed cotton one.

It has a zip and I fasten it, makes no difference. As it was, it didn't dry so I chucked in some washing and it dried and wasn't tangled. Maybe on its own there is too much room.
