Sideways extendable window cleaner for bird poo

I have a picture window which regularly gets ‘decorated’ by birds. I can’t access it from outside but I can open a window next to it and reach out sideways.

I’m looking for a tool to reach the far end of the window. It doesn’t need to be too long, 3 metres would be plenty, but I know from a similar situation that it needs to be light, as the weight working sideways gets very tiring compared to holding it vertically.

There seem to be an awful lot of choices, eg double sided flippable heads with a squeegee on one side and a cloth on the other. Or not.

I’d love to hear what you’ve used and what worked well. Or any solutions I might not have thought of. Especially for bird poo!

In true mumsnet style I’ve done a diagram.

Oh I’d be interested on some useful suggestions too @GentlyDoesItt

any extendable window cleaner advice might be useful, even if you don’t have this particular scenario. I know people use them for cleaning upper story windows.

Shameless postmarking here, sorry OP. I have a window that is difficult to reach and had similarly been decorated recently.

Glad I’m not the only one! If there’s no advice I’ll probably buy something based on Amazon reviews and report back.

Please do! I'm also in the market for one, so hoping for a suggestion or two from here . . .

Justmadesourkraut · 12/01/2026 08:53

PS Great diagram!

We tried the cleaning magnets that are used on fish tanks, but they are hopeless on double glazing.
Maybe an extendable brush or sponge used for cleaning swimmin pools?

WinterBlues26 · 13/01/2026 00:05

No idea, sorry, but 10/10 for diagram!

You can get a magnetic window cleaner. Its a double sided one. So if you move it on the inside it will clean the same outside? Sorry I can't give you a link

Have you used them? Most reports of these aren’t great, especially for double glazing. And if it drops off, which is what can happen, I wouldn’t be able to retrieve the dropped half very easily.

@GentlyDoesItt I've not actually used it yet
