I understand everyone’s situations and budgets vary. But I’m interested to know how much other family’s grocery shops amount to!

We are a family of 5 (2 parents, 18yo, 11yo, 4yo, beautiful Labrador & pet fish)
We spend roughly £200 a week that includes breakfast, lunches & dinners for us all, as well as snacks, toiletries/household products.

What’s your situation?

Do ugly labradors cost less to keep? Genuine question

muddyford · 11/01/2026 07:30

OP needn't have said 'beautiful ' as all Labradors are.

Skibbidirizzohio · 11/01/2026 07:33

First sensible answer. Around £100ish per week for me, my two kids (14 and 11) a dog and two cats. Kids are with their dad every other weekend and Wednesdays.

DiscoBeat · 11/01/2026 07:36

Similarish, including the beautiful labrador but around £300 per week these days.

We spend about that for four adults but when the dc are away at uni we spend proportionately less (probably about £60 a week) We don’t snack as much as they do and we don’t mind eating the same thing until it’s used up which means less waste.

However our dog food is outside of that budget.

£180 ish a week, 2 adults, 11 year old (who easily eats an adult portion or two), 7 year old who would just live on meat if I let him!

does breakfast, lunches (kids want a packed lunch -so I need my own berry farm) for everyone and dinners. As well as multiple snackety snacks.

cat food outside of this

About £150 a week for one adult and two kids - a bit higher than average probably because we use Hello Fresh for two or three meals each week. Includes all breakfasts and dinners plus lunch for me - kids have school dinners.

Kids with their dad every other weekend but, I often buy more wine and have more people over when they're not here, so not sure it helps reduce the food bill!

Between £100-125 for 2 adults, dd 17 and two cats.
I find nothing is cheap these days.

We are 2 adults, ds18, dd16, dd4, ds4 and spend around £160pw on average. Plus £30pw on teens college lunches and the little ones have school dinners (currently free). Cat food is separate.

Scottishlassie01 · 13/01/2026 12:24

Average about £120pw 2 adults, 1 cat, that’s including toiletries, cleaning materials etc.

whirlyhead · 13/01/2026 12:28

2 adults and 3 cats. The cats alone cost about £100 a month and us humans are about £160 a week I'd say and that's with lots of cooking from scratch and very little meat as I don't eat meat. We mainly shop in Lidl. It does include wine!

The cats are spoilt.
