What do you wash up?

Inspired by the another thread where lots of people are asking why the op is washing up when she has a dishwasher.

I have a dishwasher but still have a load of washing up every day. I wash up:
water bottles
insulated coffee cups
lunchboxes (technically they can go in the dishwasher but there isn’t usually room and they’re barely dirty)
tall wine glasses
special glasses
some hand painted egg cups
bread board
wooden chopping boards
sharp knives
the lid and seal of the instant pot
air fryer drawers
anything silicone as it smells of dishwasher if it goes in there
wooden handled frying pans
seasoned stoneware cooking dishes
anything else that doesn’t fit in the dishwasher at the end of the day

Not all of that every day but there’s always washing up!

We do put wood in ours (we have small wooden chopping boards that are dishwasher safe and it doesn't seem to harm wooden spoons either). I wouldn't put wooden handled things in though in case they came loose but we don't have any. The main things we hand wash are water bottles and plastic storage/lunch boxes, which we use a lot of for fridge storage, packed lunches etc. Also parts for the stick blender and mini chopper (the clear plastic bowls/jugs) as these get damaged by the dishwasher and tall wine glasses.

Ah yes I forgot about the blender and food processor etc. They get hand washed too, apart from the stainless steel parts which I put in the dishwasher.

I would put the air fryer drawers in but they take up too much space

My kids keep nagging me to get a dishwasher (I live alone), Then I point out that, if I've got to run a sink of hot water to wash all the bits and bobs, then I might just as well spend an extra thirty seconds washing plates and bowls, rather than carry out a whole separate action.

They all have dishwashers and just don't get it.

pretty much the same as you OP and anything with “rubbery” handles as they’ll go sticky in the DW/ not storage containers coz they’ll stain/seal gets damaged/baking trays dishes unless Pyrex

I definitely put my food processor parts (main compartment, lid, blades, grater etc) through the dishwasher. Never had any damage to it.

Why aren’t sharp knives going in the dishwasher?? All ours go in…

Jemimapuddleduk · 10/01/2026 13:13

Water bottles, Stanley cups, mugs, chopping knives, loose tea teapot, pint pots, wine glasses, gin glasses etc

High temperatures and harsh detergents can make knives blunt. Also, if you have a cutlery basket sharp knives jostle against other cutlery and this can make them blunt.

Oh… we lay ours on top rack. DH is always sharpening them and most of ours live in their own sharpening cases 😆

Are we married to the same man? 😁

Everything except the wooden chopping board. Wooden spoons and spatulas warp a bit but they still work fine. Nothing’s been ruined yet (DH sharpens knives as needed). Life is much too short to own stuff that doesn’t go in the dishwasher in my world.
