How to deal with all the cleaning jobs your cleaner doesn't clean

I have a cleaner, who does a weekly superficial clean and changes the sheets. However, I struggle to keep on top of the tasks she doesn’t do, such as:

  • Cleaning windows
  • Cleaning wooden door and window frames, skirting etc
  • Detail dusting of cupboards, shelves and art work
  • Deep cleaning the fridge and oven
  • Polishing metalware
  • Vacuuming soft furnishings

I have tried a few solutions:

  • Asking my cleaner to do additional hours/week to do odd jobs. She doesn’t do heavy cleaning, and the detail cleaning is rarely as detailed as I’d like.
  • Hiring more specific services. Good for e.g. the oven and outside windows, but doesn’t work for everything
  • Hiring an agency for periodic deep cleaning. Sort of works, but feels unnecessarily expensive - as they want to do all the routine stuff as well as the extras.

I’m now wondering whether it’s possible to hire a housekeeper style cleaner, for a few hours/week, to do all these odd jobs on rotation. Does anyone have such an arrangement? How would I even go about finding this?

You need a different cleaner! There’s no reason whatsoever she can’t be doing those jobs, she’s taking the piss

You have the wrong person.

Mine stays on top of hoovering and dusting and bathrooms and kitchens, bedding weekly then does a deep clean by room or area on rotation. She has it all planned in her head but also checks with me each week if there is anything specific I want and will adapt accordingly.

I pay mine £400 per month and she manages her hours to ensure everything is done acceptably and as required. We have a large home.

@TMMC1 where did you find your cleaner!?

How many hours do you get a week for £400?

Some window cleaners will do the insides of windows.

About 4. She brings all her own product. Sometimes there are two of them and do three hours.
sometimes 2 for two hours and more the next week.
I’m flexible with them on condition the standard is there and the house is properly clean.

Asked a neighbour who they used and would they recommend them.

Get a different cleaner! Mine does all what you describe except the oven as luckily I have pyloritic overns so I am able to sort them myself

Drivingmissrangey · 23/01/2026 16:33

Sounds like you need a new cleaner.

I get mine to come whenever we’re on holiday and that’s when she does a lot of the deeper clean stuff (so maybe once a quarter).

Frog99 · 23/01/2026 16:38

Rotation of deep cleans should be in with that
