Recommendations please for drawers and cupboards

Even when placed in zip up plastic bags, the bedding can smell musty on removal and yesterday a T-shirt I haven't worn for a while came out of the drawer smelling the same. I am having trouble drying and airing things completely so until I can sort that, can anyone recommend something I can put in bags and drawers to help with this please?

Putting it in plastic bags will just keep it damp! It needs to dry properly before going in the drawer.

buy a dehumidifier or a heated airer and get your washing properly dry before putting it away.

I do know that but the bedding was fully dry. I do have a heated airer which I don't use much as hate it and I have a dryer but I still want something to help with the drawers and bags. It's cold where I live so if is hard at times with the laundry and this is my first winter in this house.

Why all the plastic bags? I don't understand that at all as it prevents air circulation. That's why things are musty.

There are two plastic bags which I used to store the spare bedding in in the cupboard where the boiler is. They are designed for this. It's two bags. What's the point of them then if they make things worse.

If they are in the cupboard with the boiler you need to takem them out of the bags. The whole point of an airing cupboard is to 'air' the laundry inside it.

Dehumidifier.

If you insist on the bedding bags, get some large silica gel sachets and put a handful in the bags with the linen.

SharonEllis · 29/12/2025 08:46

Occasionally my spare bedding that rarely gets used has an 'off' smell but thats if its been in the cupboard for a year or so, so I just wash it occasionally or make sure to keep it all on rotation so it all gets used. I ised to live in a cold damp house. Its hard but you have to keep air circulating and not store things for too long. Plastic bags will make things worse. A dehumidifier is a game changer.

My old airing cupboard was fab as it had a huge water cylinder in there so things dried quickly when hung up and I had shelves for all the bedding and towels. Nothing smelt. Here it is just a cupboard with shelves and the boiler. I'm having to try out different things. I thought the bags would keep everything clean and fresh.

Nothing beats an old fashioned airing cupboard!

I know! It's literally the only thing I miss from living at my previous place.

I think the white company still sell cotton storage bags for bed linen, I bought some a few years ago to keep pillow cases and fitted sheets in. I’ve seen other places selling cotton and linen storage bags in different sizes too, might be better than plastic at keeping fresh things aired?

TheHillIsMine · 29/12/2025 13:26

I bought them from Lakeland and they are promoted as being for bedding.

When we had our new CH installed and the old water tank removed, the gain in airing cupboard space could potentially have been offset by the lack of heat in said cupboard.
To overcome this we had a small (non-thermostat) radiator fitted at the bottom so the cupboard was heated whenever the CH was on.
For when the CH was not being used (late Spring, Summer etc) we also had a small electric tubular heater.

And yes, as PP's have said, the plastic bags are almost certainly the cause of your problems.

Good idea!

But not for putting in a warm cupboard.

TheHillIsMine · 29/12/2025 14:13

Again, the cupboard isn't warm. And a T-shirt in a drawer was also a bit musty after weeks of being in the drawer.

Ok, sorry. Still I do think storing things is plastic bags isn't a great idea if you have issues with damp. I only store very clean woolens in plastic bags to keep moths out.

TheHillIsMine · 29/12/2025 18:57

I don't have an issue with damp.

Then why are you having trouble drying things?

TheHillIsMine · 29/12/2025 19:12

Taking time on an airer and sometimes the dryer says it's done and by the time I've brought it in and start folding it I find they aren't fully dry than have to leave them until I can deal with them. I don't have the heating on much. Today my son emptied the dryer and he said they were just cold, I thought they were still damp. Could be me that's wrong.
