Favourite white trousers ruined! HELP!

Hi all!

My prized pair of white trousers have badly stained after an unfortunate slip at the weekend...

Has anyone any cleaning advice, staining advice, or know of any trusted dry cleaners that would be able to get a stain of this sort out?

We are in the SE1 area of London, willing to travel. I tried to clean the stain myself first, soaking in stain remover & washing, then when that didn't work creating a white vinegar & baking powder paste & then washing, and most recently took to our local dry cleaners but again it has had no luck.

The trousers are a pair of Fenn Wright Manson, 50% cotton & 50% linen with a 100% acetate lining.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks

What is the stain?

Iknowdino · 11/12/2025 09:08

What stain remover did you use? Do you know what the stain is? Ie is it oil based? Mud?

jash2302 · 11/12/2025 13:56

Hi @dementedpixie @Iknowdino thanks for getting back, it is mud (slipped on the floor of a bar smoking area...)

We tried Formil Oxi Action fabric stain remover, as well as Vanish Oxi Action carpet & upholstery stain remover.

Thanks!

Stain devils do a specific mud remover. Could be worth a shot. My go to is vanish oxy action Chrystal white the one with the gold lid. Give it a real good soak in warm water and then wash as hot as you can in the machine with more vanish.

I would try a laundry soap bar (I'm sure any bar soap would work too) and rub it vigorously into the stain before rewashing

If all else fails then dye them a darker colour!

Thanks all!! Have some stains devil on the way, got my fingers crossed!!

Ive managed to rescue a few things with washing up liquid, pour on some liqued then use your finger to rub into the stain and leave to soak on then gently sponge and rub the stain as I know the fabric can go funny and also elbow grease spray is really good.

PinkKettle · 12/12/2025 08:28

Give them a really good rub with Elbow Grease laundry stain remover bar on the draining board on both sides of the fabric, followed by a few squirts of Elbow Grease spray. Allow it to soak in as directed on the spray bottle, respray and wash as normal with biological powder.

My son is a mountain biker, this has removed mud and dirt from off road biking many a time.

I second the bar soap suggestion.

Can you get a laundry bar of soap? Sunlight or the likes? (I live in another country so not sure what you can get).

If you can't get a laundry bar, just use any bar soap. Dettol or similar. Wet the bar and rub well into the stained area. Don't be shy, I am convinced the rubbing action goes a long way. It will leave a coating of the soap on the area. Then leave that overnight or for a day or so. Then wash again normally. With them being linen, you might need to do a longer but cooler wash.

Im a big fan of soaking bio stains in a strong solution of biological washing powder and cold water. Won't hurt, might work, worth a try.

I spilt red pesto on my white cotton/linen trousers. Rubbed fairy liquid onto the stain then tried some Dr Beckman carpet cleaner which has a little brush on the top. Brushed both sides of the stain whilst the trousers were flat on the draining board. Then washed in machine. Stain gone! Good luck x

PinkPepperPolka · 12/12/2025 08:47

Don’t forget the power of sunlight. If all else fails. Possibly less effective in the winter, but worth a try.

Redwinedaze · 12/12/2025 08:58

Have you tried washing up liquid, I use it for every stain! Has to be Fairy liquid left to soak for a bit with the liquid rubbed in. It’s a miracle stain remover.

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/12/2025 09:36

Try a vanish stain remover bar (bit like a bar of soap)

Iknowdino · 18/12/2025 14:53

Have you had any joy removing the stain???

03cg73 · 18/12/2025 14:58

Try fairy skip the soak. It’s meant for dishes but has rescued many many items of our clothing. It gets out oil stains and everything. I usually just spray it on, leave it to soak in and then wash the clothes as normal. There isn’t a single stain I’ve sprayed it on that it hasn’t managed to remove

added bonus that that the foam is white so won’t discolour your trousers
