Christmas bonus for cleaner

Hi, wondering what's a reasonable Christmas bonus / gift for a cleaner? I have had one coming for the last 3-4 months for two hours a week, but I never had one before so not sure what the done thing is.

To be honest there’s no rule, (I’m a p/t self employed cleaner). I’ve had 1 or 2 weeks wages, M&S vouchers, (£50), wine, (I’m teetotal…), scarves, toiletries and nothing at all. Completely up to you. If she does a really good job and is reliable, then maybe give her an extra week’s pay?

notamorningpanda · 08/12/2025 15:04

Thanks! Would you give the extra weeks payment as cash in an envelope (maybe with a box of choc and Christmas card) or just transfer the extra amount together with the normal payment?

I just give mine £30 cash in a card. It’s about the same amount as I spend on my nephews and nieces ao any more than that would be a bit odd. But I’m sure it will add up for her, over all her clients

I wouldn't be inclined to give a bonus at all. If they are self-employed, they set their own rates; I wouldn't expect them to be relying on bonuses from customers to top up their wages. If they want to earn more, they can set a higher hourly rate. If they work for an agency, it's up to their employer - the agency - to give them a bonus.

If you think she's amazing at her job and want to be really kind, I'd maybe gift a box of chocolates or a bottle of something.

ArcticBear · 08/12/2025 15:15

I give her £50.
She’s great, reliable, flexible. So I’m more than happy to give her a little Xmas bonus / present to say thanks. 🎁

singlemum2025 · 08/12/2025 15:15

I’m a cleaner and normally have a week or two off from cleaning over Christmas and my clients normally pay me for the week or two I don’t clean as a Xmas ‘bonus’ some also get me extra little bits - one family buys my children gifts and myself and last week presented me with a fancy advent calendar! It’s nice to feel appreciated but it expected at all. I do also buy my families a little gift too - biscuits or a chocolate tin type thing!

BellaBal · 08/12/2025 15:16

I put cash in envelope with Xmas card. It’s a gift not a wage so recipient shouldn’t feel obliged to take it into account for tax etc

mondaytosunday · 08/12/2025 15:46

One week’s wages.

Rocknrollstar · 08/12/2025 15:50

I give a week’s wages in a Christmas card. Don’t give a present but do give her one for her birthday in February.

carbonelthecat · 08/12/2025 15:55

An extra week’s wages, so I just paid double the last week before Christmas.

NetZeroZealot · 13/12/2025 17:30

Mine gets a week of paid leave & a large box of posh biscuits.

MidnightSunGazer · 13/12/2025 17:32

I don’t have a cleaner, but if I did I’d give her a voucher or something she isn’t going to be taxed on.

DancingNotDrowning · 13/12/2025 17:34

Cash (1 weeks wages - she does 20 hrs for us) and a box of posh chocs

Nomdemare · 18/12/2025 18:22

2 weeks pay as bonus in card £250 plus paid holiday to cover what would be our usual Thursday clean. So, £370 total.
I have a huge respect for my team of two cleaners: they’ve had a really difficult personal year x

DivorcedButHappyNow · 18/12/2025 18:54

Mine is every week for 3hrs. I give her a wrapped gift and I pay an extra week. She’s been with me for years.

CoastalCalm · 18/12/2025 19:50

I gave ours double pay so £80 vs £40 - she’s a godsend to me

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 18/12/2025 19:54

I pay an extra week

SquigglePigs · 18/12/2025 20:08

We give ours a £50 voucher. She's fantastic. What she can do in 3 hrs never ceases to amaze me!

Soony · 18/12/2025 20:11

I have a cleaner once a month and give her £30 extra at Christmas, in cash not into the bank as usual

cadburygorilla · 18/12/2025 20:12

Oh gosh, I feel bad reading these. My cleaner comes for an hour every 4 weeks because of my health and I only gave her a box of chocolates. I’ll consider giving more next year now thay I’ve seen the status quo

sconeandcream · 18/12/2025 20:13

just jumping on here & asking for some advice. My cleaners change all the time as they are with a ( brilliant ) little company so I have no idea what to do ! Any advice would we welcome :)

AvocadoJam · 18/12/2025 20:22

An extra week and a little gift for her son.

I do feel it is quite generous but I don't know what I'd without her and she makes our life 10 times easier.

She actually got me some biccies this year!
