Febreze - How to get rid of the smell?

I bought a jacket from Vinted and it reeks of Febreze. It's dry clean only but I can't hang it outside. I have a steam refresh programme on my washing machine but it says not to use for dry clean items. Should I risk it?

Because it only cost me a few pounds not really worth it as it would cost more to clean than it cost me!

That’s vinted for you. I bought a lovely dress and no problems with smell, but it’s dry clean only and the first time I cleaned it, it cost me more than the dress

It was brand new but some people on Vinted spray everything regardless

I worked in a dry cleaners for years. Most things can be washed the only problem with jackets is if the lining shrinks and if it need to be put on a body form steamer and hard to iron. I don't take any of my items to them now if it washes you could always ask if they could press it for you.

Poppingby · 05/12/2025 09:01

What's it made of? I'd do a delicates wash in the machine tbh. Steam refresh sounds hot so I wouldn't do that. I've washed wool coats like this loads of times including my h's which has structured shoulders and a lining. Anything that doesn't get too hot or move around too much. I'm not promising it won't fuck it though.

I'd bang that in a quick, cold and gentle wash. Maybe even no detergent.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/12/2025 14:42

Why can’t you put it outside? Can you hang it out of an open window for a bit if no garden.

yellowgeranium · 05/12/2025 16:22

I could put it outside when it stops raining, at the moment its by an open window but smelling the room out which is why I thought I might put it in machine

I'd just put it in the machine on a delicates wash. No conditioner. I think it must be either the fake fur that means you can't wash it or lazy care labels which certainly exist. You're not going to wear it if it smells anyway so it's worth the risk to my mind.

SirChenjins · 06/12/2025 09:26

I stick most things marked dry clean only in the machine on a wool or silk/delicates wash - they've all been fine. I wouldn't risk leather or suede, but ypur cost should be fine. Primark stuff usually says dry clean only but I take that to mean it just hasn't been fully assessed and approved for a standard wash cycle.

Nevergotdivorced · 06/12/2025 09:29

Hang it outside or somewhere cold for a few days if that doesn’t work try washing it, I would put it in a duvet cover to wash on a wool programme.

Febreze is the work of the devil, we once had a tenant who sprayed it everywhere because he smoked inside our house which he wasn’t supposed to.

I would have preferred the smell of cigarettes.

mydogisanidiott · 06/12/2025 09:31

I’d wash that in delicates and then do two 600 spins and then put in the heat pump dryer in low.

if you don’t have a heat pump dryer just keep checking and shaking

yellowgeranium · 06/12/2025 13:32

Thanks for all the advice I'll leave it hanging up for a week or so then decide. If it wasn't brand new I wouldn't hesitate chucking it in the wash!
