Decluttering and home organisation

Hi,
I'm struggling with my home at the moment. I'm just not enjoying it. It's cluttered and I need to start de-cluttering but it's overwhelming. I will start, I just need to. I also don't have the creative vision in decoration. I can't visualise what I want or need in order to make my home lovely. It's a small house with no extra storage space, cupboards etc, so I've ended up with 1 room being a room where we chuck everything, hoover, clothes drying horses, cat litter, etc.
So please can you inspire me on where such things 'live' in your house?
Hoover
Buggy
Children's craft stuff
Clothes horse
Cat litter and cat food
stationary
printing paper
handbags, rucksacks, school bags
extra nappies and boxes of wipes
toddler bikes/scooters
bags 4 life
Umbrellas

At the moment they're all chucked in one room and I hate it.

Thanks for your time,

I think we'd need to know what your house is like.

Do you have a porch?
Garage?
Cupboard under the stairs?
Hallway ?

etc.

No good me saying 'that all goes in the garage' if you don't have one.

hannahbanana2007 · 04/12/2025 00:22

Yes, if you can give some idea on the house rooms/storage spaces available that would help guide any suggestions

Crispynoodle · 04/12/2025 00:23

Oh my this is going to sound like a stealth boast but
hoover upstairs one in the space under the attic stairs with the upstairs cleaning stuff
no need for buggy they’ve all left the nest
my art stuff in my study, my other hobby stuff in my sewing room
clothes horse in the outside utility room
cat litter…….omg in the big family bathroom we have our en-suite
stationary and printing paper in the study
no need for nappies
DGSs outside toys in the shed
bags for life in the utility room and car boot
umbrellas one in the car and 2 in the wooden vase thingy I keep my walking sticks in
just to say I do realise how lucky my DH and I are living in our big ole house but the reality is different I doubt we’d get 300K for it as where we live house prices aren’t to bad you get a lot of house for your buck!

Buggy stays in the boot of our car when not being used.
Hoover, clothes horse etc goes in a cupboard at the top of the cellarstairs/under the main stairs. Only get out when being used the put back.
Toddler bikes and scooters on the garden or in the shed.
Stationary/paper/craft stuff in a big kallax unit
Extra nappies and wipes in a drawer in the bedroom
Bags,.umbrellas etc in the hallway
Bags for life in a random kitchen cupboard

NuffSaidSam · 04/12/2025 00:27

Do you have space for a shed in the garden? If so, I would invest in a good one and keep scooters/bikes, cat litter, any extra cat food/nappies/wipes in there.

We have a cupboard in the hall that has coats, umbrellas, bags, bags for life, hoover and clothes horse in (plus some other stuff).

Printing paper - next to/under the printer. If you bought in bulk and there's loads - in the shed.

Stationery - in a drawer somewhere. Probably near the printer...or in the kitchen.

Kids craft stuff in some kind of kids storage...maybe a Kallax or similar.

The buggy is destined to live in the hall I think. Unless you can be bothered to fold it and keep it in the shed or in the boot of the car.

thecalmsea · 04/12/2025 00:27

Bags for life - get one of those things from ikea with holes and hang on back of a cupboard door (mines in utility room)

Hoover mines a dyson handheld so on the wall.mounted thing, also in utility room. But yeah a lot depends on yiur setup, most of my stuff is in garage or utility room, but not much help if you dont have either.

Kids craft stuff - in various stirage containers from ikea on a large shelving unit in the dining room.

Generally though storage harmony is mainy achieved through multiple trips to the Ikea storage department and more shelving units than you ever thought you could possibly need. Im a big fan of the small cheap ones you can getbon amazon slotted into random gaps and spaces.

Yourethebeerthief · 04/12/2025 00:38

Hoover- In a cupboard in the kitchen
Buggy- we’re past those days now but it used to be folded in our entrance way, or in the car boot
Children's craft stuff- one craft box and one play dough box have a place in a kitchen cupboard as we use them at the kitchen table
Clothes horse- folded up in the kitchen until needed
Bags- on hooks in the entrance way. We each have a rucksack and I have an additional shoulder bag for work.
Nappies and wipes etc- used to be kept in a carry basket. Extras were kept in a cupboard in our bedroom.
Bike & scooter- either in the car or in our garage
Bags for life- all folded into one bag and kept in a cupboard in the kitchen

Firmly believe in “a place for everything, and everything in it’s place”

LemograssLollipop · 04/12/2025 00:39

Don't fall into the trap of buying more and more storage to keep your stuff in. Especially as you say your house is small.

The trick is to reduce what you have. Tough with little kids, I know.

An outdoor shed is a good idea and think vertical - use the whole height of rooms for shelves/cupboards.

Sheds are great for anything that isn't affected by being damp.

lynnebenfieldshandbag · 04/12/2025 08:21

I actually don’t think it’s terrible to have one room as a storage room - but do you also need to use that room for something else?

In my kitchen there are no cupboards, just alcoves and open shelving. I hate it as everything always looks messy but I’ve got round it to an extent by buying lots of baskets, either wicker or wire, which mostly hide the contents and make the room look tidier.

I think you need containers! In my house …

Hoover - behind the kitchen door
Buggy - used to live in the hallway but I got rid of it as quickly as possible. A fold up stroller is easier to store.
Children's craft stuff - a big plastic storage box inside the dresser
Clothes horse - in the gap next to the washing machine
Cat litter and cat food - I have a big wire basket from Ikea for this
stationary - we have a freestanding sideboard and it goes in here
printing paper - sideboard as above
handbags, rucksacks, school bags - each child has their own peg for school bag by the back door. Handbags go upstairs in a drawer in my room unless in use
extra nappies and boxes of wipes - under son’s bed
toddler bikes/scooters - these are a perennial pain in the bum and clutter up whatever room they happen to be in. Ideally I would put a little bike store outside
bags 4 life - wicker basket in the kitchen, but I also throw these away ruthlessly
Umbrellas - in an umbrella stand in the hallway

Small house with no extra storage space, cupboards etc.
no porch, garage, cupboard under the stairs, small hallway etc

This is not clear.
Are you saying you have no garage, no cupboard under the stairs, and only a small hallway? Or no hallway?

If you don't have enough cupboards, you need to buy wardrobes, chests of drawers, etc. Or get cupboards built by a carpenter, but that won't be cheap.

That was in response to @RecordBreakers questions. She asked if I have a porch, garage, cupboard under the stairs, hallway.

I have no porch, no garage, no cupboard under the stairs, and I have a small hallway.

I'm fine with wardrobes, and chest of drawers. It's mainly the items I listed that I have a particular issue with so I asked where such items are placed in your own home (for inspiration).

To have specific rooms for things is lovely.

A shed is on the to do list for sure. We have space in the garden.

Unfortunately yes we do need it and it's such a shame it's in the state it's in.

Kids craft stuff is in a 2x4 kallax, we put drawers in all but two of the cubby holes and then labelled for colouring pens, books, paints etc. Spare stationery goes in those drawers too. It holds tonnes and everything is easily found because it’s divided into smaller drawers. The two big cubby holes contain fabric and yarn for sewing and knitting.

I have a tall cupboard in the downstairs toilet for the hoover, mop and brush and cleaning supplies.

Kids coats and bags go on pegs in their bedroom, they each have an over the door set up with 4 pegs.

Jellycatspyjamas · 04/12/2025 14:11

The bikes etc are in the shed, one side of the shed is shelved for extra cat litter, tins and non-perishable food stuff - in plastic crates with lids to prevent vermin getting in.

LegoLandslide · 04/12/2025 14:17

I keep everything as close to where I use it as possible, except the hoover (which is under the stairs).

Stationery in the desk , printer paper under the printer, cat food by the cats bowl, buggy in the boot. Nappies under the changing mat (although we are past that stage now).

It's bittersweet when you get past all the Giant Stuff stage and get the house back!

AuntiePushpa · 04/12/2025 14:28

Ialso have a tiny flat with zero storage.
Hoover - behind bedroom door
Clothes horse - folded at the side of washing machine
Cat litter and cat food - my coffee table is a square wooden chest, so all goes in there in big perspex boxes
stationery and craft stuff - wicker basket by my desk
printing paper - got rid of printer
handbags, school bags - hooks by front door for ones in constant use. Others and rucksacks and other extra stuff well-sorted and in perspex boxes under the bed
bags 4 life - use them to take your decluttered stuff to the charity shop! Don't keep more than 2/3. Under kitchen sink
Umbrellas - one, on hook by front door
