Do you leave the outdoor tap open or close when turning off the supply during freezing weather?

I've never had one before.
Thanks
Title should say Closed not close

Closed and we put one of those foam insulation covers over it.
Some water companies provide free winter kits that are really helpful. I’m with Severn Trent and got one last year, it included insulated covers for outside taps and pipes, foam to put around windows and a few other bits.

Thank you. I'll turn the supply off tomorrow to it and let the water run off, then turn the tap off. I've got a cover for it I bought on amazon

As long as you empty all the water out of the pipes then closed is fine. The risk is that you’ll have a leaky valve, the pipes will fill up, freeze and burst, so if in any doubt leave the tap open and the main valve closed

Thank you. I wonder if it would be more likely to burst if you were away and not using heating and hot water as they might help it not to freeze. If they warm the area round it

I always shut off my outdoor taps around this time of year...disconnect hoses, make sure all the water is out of them and put them away.
Turn off the water valve that's on the inside of the house, go outside open the tap make sure all the water is out, then shut the tap on the outside of the house, and then I know that it's done for the winter.
And if we happen to have a super mild day in which I need water running outside, too bad. I'll take a bucket of water from inside and bring it outside.
That's what I do, anyway

Thanks. The work man who installed it showed me how to shut off the valve.

Thought it would be a simple job but the screw for the valve is just going round and round about 100 times and not turning off. Frustrating

Ok the water's gone off now. I thought you'd turn it a couple of times til you couldn't turn it rather than it just going round and round endlessly. At least the water's off and I've put the tap mitten thing on
