Limescale (toilet)

How do you get rid of limescale in the toilet? I live in an area where the water is prone to limescale so it's not my doing, but it makes the toilet look permanently dirty. Any products/quick fixes that actually work?

Harpic in the black bottle, ideally left for a few hours overnight or while you go out. Occasionally we scoop all the water out, tip a bottle of cheap white vinegar down it and leave for as long as possible.

Citric acid powder - just put a tablespoon in and leave it for a while (ideally overnight) before scrubbing.

Harpic limescale.
Domestos limescale

Harpic black bottle. Generous squirt left overnight and then a normal clean with a loo brush will get it off.

HG products are brilliant for this sort of thing. If you google HG limescale toilet cleaner it will show you the range.

Black harpic but actually scrubbing with a toilet brush is the best. Or get a cheap dish brush with the scraper edge.

or citric acid powder and put some hot water in the toilet bowl with the powder r

OK,

From a friend who was a plumber

  1. Its a reaction with urine so flush. Our upstairs is far worse than downstairs which proves it.
  2. When you go away for any length of time chuck some hot water into the pan followed by a big bottle of Kilrok descaler. Give it a good scrub with the loo brush when you get home

Toilet pumice stone for the limescale on the rim. It really works - but you do need to rub hard https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/house-and-home/household-advice/a64724474/toilet-pumice-stone/

Came onto the thread to say this! Pumice really does work where everything else fails. I used the Maryton one from Amazon, but I'm sure any pumice would do the job.

Citric Acid.

I used Spirit of Salt when I had to clean on in one of our rental properties which was very scaled up and totally brown.

I had tried all else including the Harpic already suggested and was really beginning to think I would have to get a new toilet. Spirit of Salt was the last resort as I know it is mega strong. It worked though and brought the toilet up like new.

You can't use anything else with it though as it is pure hydrochloric acid so give a good couple of flushes first and have the window open while you leave it to work. It takes about half an hour to an hour and does give off fumes at first.
