Do you ever tumble dry things that say not to?

Drowning in laundry after such a wet week!

Ds’s wear a lot of tracksuit bottoms, sweatshirts/hoodies and t-shirts that say do not tumble dry on the care label (Nike, Gymshark, myprotein etc)

They take so long to dry, especially with the heating not coming on every day at this time of year.

I wondered how they might fair if I put them in the tumble dryer on the cool setting but none of it is cheap so I don’t want to ruin them!

Anyone tried it, and what was the outcome?

TIA

I don't tumble gym wear or anything with lycra, even jeans.

I do tumble cotton hoodies, joggers, pants. All my pants say do not tumble, but I ignore that.

I never use the hot tumble on anything. Only cool.

Yes, all the time - but not our expensive stuff, and I include DS's Nike etc stuff in that. I occasionally risk it just to finish it off if it's just a bit damp, but not from wet.

BlueWorkDay · 25/10/2025 15:57

I tumble dry very little from wet, but once it's been hanging for 36 hours, and is mainly dry (and edging towards getting stale), I tumble dry almost anything (not withstanding cashmere, silk, etc.).

Most would be fine. Virtually nothing should be tumble dried if you look in detail at the label. I've done plenty of tracksuit bottoms in the dryer and never had an issue.

I don't put woollens in or things that have elastic through and through them (bras, swimming costumes), but everything else is fair game and goes in if it needs to.

This is music to my ears! Thanks everyone.

I am a bit of a slave to the labels!

None of my bathers or stretchy gym leggings will go in but I reckon I’ll start with some of their older joggers and hoodies and go from there!

I tumble dry joggers, sweatshirts etc, I usually dry them inside out never have any problems with them shrinking or sticking. I can’t stand washing hanging about the house so in winter it all goes in unless it’s wool.

I lived in the US for a bit where everyone uses tumble dryers. LOADS of my clothes that I brought over from England said 'do not tumble dry' or 'tumble dry low' only. I swear if I bought clothes in the US most of them didn't have this on the label. I think everyone just chucks it in the dryer there unless it's silk/wool etc.

I am more cavalier now (or I would be if I had a tumble dryer in my current house!)

HarrietSchulenberg · 25/10/2025 17:27

A lot of clothes labels say do not tumble dry as they haven't been product tested using dryers to keep costs down. Ypu can usually work it out by fabric type but also check what buttons and zips are made of. Most things will tumble dry on a cool setting.
I can tell you that if Balenciaga say not to tumble dry their item, they mean it. DS1 just could nor wait for his £500 top to dry on the airer so tumbled it, and was quite upset when he realised it shrank by about 4 sizes. Expensive lesson learned.

Salvadoridory · 25/10/2025 17:37

Should I not be drying sweaty Betty stuff?

Cyclistmumgrandma · 25/10/2025 18:15

Rather than tumbling dry, I have an airer, a fan and a dehumidifier in the utility room. They dry most things in about 4 hours.

Oldartist · 26/10/2025 08:17

Often it’s the logos or detailed decorations that don’t tumble dry well. So just keep an eye on them. When you need a new dryer get a “Heat pump” type of dryer. They are MUCH kinder to clothes, very economical to use. Expensive to buy, but you’ll make it back on your bills. I’ve had no drying disasters in 6 years with mine. Only disadvantage is they don’t work in very cold (below freezing) environments, so can be a problem if your dryer is in the garage in winter.

SoftPillow · 26/10/2025 08:20

I don’t tumble dry anything except towels

I have however got a heated airer and that works a treat

LightDrizzle · 26/10/2025 08:34

No! Far too scared. I very rarely use the tumble drier, maybe 3 time a year, it came with the house.

I do hand wash the odd dry cleaning only item that sneaks through my label vetting.

MavisBarrel · 26/10/2025 09:44

I put pretty much everything in mine - recently got a new cheaper tumble drier and was a bit nervous but it has a sport setting so any of Dcs sports kits go on that - never had an issue. It might possibly affect longevity if you have those stuck on letterings on football kits but we have normally out grown things before that’s an issue !

BogRollBOGOF · 26/10/2025 12:36

I'd only not tumble dry obvious fabrics like wool or silk, but try not to buy tempermental clothes.

Life's too short to have pernickity, high-maintainence clothes!

notthatoldchestnut · 26/10/2025 12:59

I tumble dry everything. It’s all on cottons (low temperature) and I’ve never had anything shrink or go bad
