How to make your home smell nice?

Lockdownbaby2021 · 09/10/2025 16:06

How do you get you get your home to smell nice? I've been in many home where you walk in and it smells fresh and clean. Mine smells of 'meh' , sometimes foody, sometimes foisty, sometimes just of nothing. I clean regularly, the only thing I can't do often is wash the carpets.

I have reed diffusers but They don't do a lot!

Give me all your tips!!

Open the windows.

StanfreyPock · 09/10/2025 16:25

Same here, open the windows, on a sunny day summer or winter hang out rugs, duvets, throws, cushions etc to air.
Dust with a damp cloth with a drop of citrus orange castile soap, leaves a nice smell.
We don't use any other smelly products like diffusers or plug ins, really dislike stuff like that.

MrsTrellisOgleddCymru · 09/10/2025 16:30

I open my windows every day, even in the middle of winter (max half hour then!) I make sure any throws, pillows etc are washed weekly, and try and dry them outside, luckily I have a covered balcony I can use. When cooking something particularly pongy I make sure kitchen door is shut, and a window open.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/10/2025 16:32

clean it, air it, don't have dogs

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 09/10/2025 16:32

I make people go outside to pass wind and discourage big trips to the toilet. Sounds crazy but it's the biggest source of bad smells.

Meadowfinch · 09/10/2025 16:54

Open windows. Clean cool air is much better than a stuffy fug.

Lockdownbaby2021 · 09/10/2025 17:02

We have at least 1 window open all year round, don't have pets, just two young boys (4 and 1)🤣

But that’s what toilets are for. Do they have to hold their bowels until they leave the house? That’s mad.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/10/2025 17:06

is it an older house or built from stone?

Open the windows and keep soft furnishings clean. I wash curtains once a year and hang them back up to dry. Throws and cushion covers from sofa get washed every month or two unless they actively get dirty. Rugs and carpets, I borrow the rug doctor things from Tesco once a year. No pets, just a busy 4 person household!

Tell me you’re joking. Where do your friends and family go to the toilet? You can’t stop people having their bowels open!

Clean the hob after cooking on it. If you do it each time it only takes a minute or two even with a gas hob which I have. Helps keep the cooking smells down. Also clean your oven on a regular basis and keep your filters clean.

Empty bins often and give the kitchen bin a quick clean (v quick spray and wipe) each time you change the bag. Same with the food waste caddy and use a compostable liner in there to stop the caddy getting nasty.

Throw open the windows as often as you can and hoover and dust each room at least once a week. Hoover/sweep high traffic areas several times a week.

Change bedding and towels often. Clean toilets (just the loo) daily.

Deliveroo · 09/10/2025 17:29

Change the air filters in the kitchen. And switch on the extractor when cooking.

Open windows every day for a few minutes,

Change bins daily at a minimum and wipe up spills.

Clean the things that hold smells - like soft furnishings, carpets, rugs, pet beds, teenagers beds(!) and teach everyone in your home to use a toilet brush.

Don’t let mould build up in bathrooms, or wherever laundry is dried, and dry it fully (it gets musty smelling)

Pop little baggies (I use old socks) of breadsoda into shoes and spritz the smellies boots with vodka occasionally.

food waste caddy? what is this?? Maybe it's a district thing but we just put food in our general waste here!

Occasionally, I open wide the back door and the front door to really air the place.
Ditto upstairs front and back windows, to get a throughflow of air.

Don’t just empty the bins, clear the bins too.

I use a solution of water, drop of fairy liquid and an essential oil in a spray bottle to freshen up the rugs, fabric sofas and curtains.

BorgQueen · 09/10/2025 18:04

Regularly change your cooker hood filter, I can smell when mine needs changing even before it changes colour, keep your oven clean and use an air purifier.

I febreeze my curtains and cushions every month.

Yes it depends on how your local
authority does recycling. Ours has a separate bin for all food waste, which is emptied weekly, whereas our recycling and general waste are on alternate weeks.

I have a small food caddy with a compostable liner in the kitchen so that vegetable peelings, egg shells, scraps etc can go in there and then when it’s full I pop it in the outside food bin. Sometimes it gets a bit smelly, especially if there are bits of fish or vegetables that are going over so I empty it fairly frequently.

How do i do this?
How do I know where to buy a replacement? We didn’t buy the oven.
Sorry but I really want to do this and haven’t a clue how! 😬

Some lovely diffusers out there

In addition to what others have said:

Putting bleach down plug holes
shampooing carpets

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 10/10/2025 09:48

I open the windows.

I find it smells nice when I've had washing drying, I'll get a waft as I come in (a bit like the washing powder aisle in the supermarket always smells nice). Also smells nice after I've done the housework, as you can smell the polish and bathroom cleaner, it just smells clean.

But fresh air is a wonderful thing and it's free.

Catpiece · 10/10/2025 10:30

Windows open all year round; even just a crack. No dogs. Keep on top of the washing. Plus, yesterday I bought a pumpkin spiced plug-in. Omg it smells amazing (sorry, sorry, sorry) x
