I really LOVE the vintage look, and now dd is getting older she wants a more grown up room too, how do I go about doing it?

We are a two girl household, dd and myself, and I really want to make our house much more feminine, as currently it is rather sparce, no mater what I do to try and combat it, and it jsut looks mismash and cluttered. I'm really bad at things like this and I always get "looks" wrong. Are there any things I can bring into the house to make it look more feminine? I adore vintage things, and would love to give it a hint of vintage femininity. Dd has a lot of aspace furniture in her room anyway, but it never looks like it does on the website!

all white easy to accessorise tho, so youre laughing. pick the wall with smallest amount of wall space and paint it a nice vibrant colour.
and get nice throws for the sofa and chair (nice choices btw, but are you able to make one a diff colour from the other? or is it too late? doesnt matter if you drape throws over em anyway)

BoyzntheShire · 03/06/2008 17:02

for kitchen, pick up odds and sods about the place as you go - bowls and jugs n stuff, and leave them about. they will make the place charactery and individual in no time, as you build up a few pieces.

thought youd like it.

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 17:05

ok this may be too late but....
steely blue is cold

also matching chair/sofa not good
you need a bit of variety

Ilovebunting · 03/06/2008 17:06

Was going to get the chair in fawn, but then worried that they may clash and thought that I would just accessorise them differently, but think I want to change the chair colour now. I think I still have time to change it though-will need throws on anyway if the dd gets her hands on them! And we do have a caramel coloured oversized armchair of mum's that is going in between them, so may break up the blue!

sofa itself very nice
I would go for a richer colour defo
and maybe a contrasting chair something modern maybe leather?

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 17:08

paint horrid bookcases in f&b lime white or similar and put nice things on

Ilovebunting · 03/06/2008 17:10

Hurrah hurrah hurrah, the armchair is now in fawn (it is my reading chair, or will be!), so no probs there. Thank you my style gurus! xxx The woman sounded extremely worried about me putting two items of different colours in the same room though! I know the steely blue looks a bit cold but I loved it so much on that sofa, and with a nice warm coloured rug it should be ok (hopefully!) xx

Am not allowed to touch horrid bookcases (boo!!) or walls as I'm renting from the university, and they like everything to be as 80's office-like as poss (although the house is amazing so it's a small price to pay!). Have covered them in interesting trinkets and tons of books though and confined them to an alcove, so they aren't as imposing as they once were! x

deep turquoise MUCH nicer I think

Ilovebunting · 03/06/2008 17:21

The deep turquoise swatch wasn't as nice as it was a different type of velvet, but I was tempted! It's a bit more silvery than blue-it changes in the light-I've been trying it out on the current (gross) sofa and it does look nice, I promise xxx

DarthVader · 03/06/2008 17:27

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 17:28

and a pretty little chandelier or somehting like that

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 17:31

I don't like art bought to match furniture !

tictactless · 03/06/2008 17:32

Sorry have not read all posts (trying to cook supper for dcs as I type this) so sorry if she's already been mentioned.

Rachel ashwell is the queen of this- I tend to look at her stuff and pinch ideas. At the moment I have lots of beautiful glass Bottles and cookie jars in my bathroom and I'm planning on getting a chandelier in there too. I love that things which are chipped and shabby look good in my house as the new stuff soon gets that way!

shabby

BoyzntheShire · 03/06/2008 17:56

that picture is lovely.
and i think a deeper colour too. at least for the chair... a deep dark red or the turquoise suggested already

BoyzntheShire · 03/06/2008 17:57

actually, anyone know where i can get a shabby looking chandelier? not £££

poss even not working, then i can add fibre optics for the actual light as its going to be in a wet room and my sparky wont fit it unless its safe...

dylsmum1998 · 03/06/2008 18:19

oh wow i love all the stuff on this thread. I'm all excited and cant wait to move have some fab ideas- will def be here by the end of the year asking for advice!!

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 19:19

yes I don't like art and furniture matching either - those colours just made me think of that van gogh
