Floor cleaning

Hi,

I've got

  • floor tiles in x2 bathrooms
  • lvt flooring in the kitchen
  • lvt flooring in x2 kids bedroom

Questions:

  1. how many mops should I have and if so, which ones would you recommend?
  2. how often would you clean these areas?

Surely you oonly need one mop?

I use the robot vacuum frequently and so I do not mop as often as i should. Tends to be done fortnightly by the cleaner. I do feel that really mopping SHOULD be done weekly.

I do a whole house mop once a week but do keep a cloth & anti-bac spray in both bathrooms and will wipe the floor (or around the toilet at least) 2 or 3 times in between. I only have one mop can’t see the need for a second one, but I do remove the head and put it in the washing machine after each mop.
I’ve also recently discovered method almond no water cleaner. It’s no substitute for a proper hot water scrub but is great for a quick dash in between to leave it looking and smelling a bit fresher

I have one steam mop for kitchen, hall, living and dining rooms and bathroom. Can’t think why you’d need/want more than one. I ought to mop more than I do; kitchen & bathrooms get done weekly, everywhere else a lot less. We do mostly use the kitchen door, though, and we’re a shoes off house, so I convince myself the hall & reception rooms are fine.

LVT manufacturers usually advise not to use steam mops as they can affect the glue used when the flooring was laid.

We have a Karcher hard floor cleaner. It's easier than using a mop and bucket, doesn't use a lot of water and keeps clean and dirty water separate. Also you can use whatever cleaner/detergent you like in it. I often use disinfectant, but have wood cleaner for wooden floors.

I don’t have LVT, but am forced to admit that even if I did, they’d so rarely see the mop, they’d probably survive into the next century.

Thanks, I read somewhere that you should have a different mop for your kitchen and bathroom specifically

That sounds like a line from a marketing department press release or a sales rep.

I use one old fashioned mop for everything. Hot water in a bucket with a slosh of methylated spirits. But, I loathe a mop sitting around wet and smelling. I thankfully live in Perth so my mop lives outside where it is able to dry properly.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 03/10/2025 13:57

Commercial cleaning companies tend to use different mops for kitchens and bathrooms. As we don't prep food on, or eat it from, the floor it seems overkill to me, particularly when they use antibacterial or antiviral cleaning products and hot water.

Belladog1 · 03/10/2025 14:01

I use a mop with different Method, no water cleaner. I have wooden floors downstairs, so I use the Almond wooden floor cleaner. In the two bathrooms upstairs, they are lino (I think) so I use the grapefruit Method one for those. The mop has got a removeable end, so I just do the whole house and then wazz it in the washing machine every week.

limetrees32 · 04/10/2025 07:45

@TheSandgroper methalayted spirit! How interesting.
How did you come to choose this ?

TheSandgroper · 04/10/2025 08:22

@limetrees32 funny, one of my email addresses starts as “lime tree …”

My mum put me onto it. She had tiles and would mop with PineoClean but not like the residue so would go over it again with hot water and metho as a degreaser. I have elderly lino and tiles in different areas so just use the metho.

I dunno why, really. I just fell into it and it works. DH buys 5 litre bottles for me so it’s as cheap as anything else. It’s possible I did the twice over method many years ago then wondered why / thought doing it twice was idiotic so just did the metho and decided that it suited me.

Nowdontmakeamess · 04/10/2025 08:33

I use a different mop for kitchen and bathroom, it’s just unhygienic otherwise. Downstairs is regular mop with bucket of hot water/floor cleaner for tiled & wooden flooring, bathrooms is flash mop with disposable wipes.

limetrees32 · 04/10/2025 08:59

@TheSandgroper ooh I'm liking this rationale !
You could probably have a whole channel/vlog or whatever it's now called
"the metho method by sandgroper"

TheSandgroper · 04/10/2025 09:10

@limetrees32 umm, I keep metho in a spray bottle in my bathroom to keep on top of the mould in winter, too. We have a glass brick wall so lots of grouting. I then scrub the bath and wash the windows down with washing powder in a bucket with a bit of water. Again, cheap and efficient.

limetrees32 · 04/10/2025 09:14

Excellent - I'll be looking you up on you tube !
Joking aside that sounds good advice re the mould .
But I'm surprised about use of washing powder on windows from a metho girl.

I have decided I love washing powder. About a dessert spoon in a couple of litres of hot water, one of those enormous yellow sponges and splash away. It’s amazing on the bath. Once around with the sponge. Once around again and all the grime just slides off. I had been using bicarbonate and vinegar previously but that took a lot of effort. This way is like magic.

By windows, I mean outside. Also the doors. They are so filthy - salt, smoke, sand, pollen - you name it so it needs something that is good on dirt. Voila - washing powder. Then I squirt the hose over.

crazycatladie · 09/10/2025 07:45

i have one mop. Do living room first then kitchen then bathrooms, then hallway, put in washer , wash at 60 degrees. Spin mop.

shellyleppard · 09/10/2025 07:47

I use a steam mop. The pads go in the wash when I've finished. Takes five minutes for the floors to be dry too

I'm thinking of trying a steam mop because I find the old style ones so cumbersome and we have lots of stairs so heavy a bucket of water-that-is-v-soon-dirty around the place is a real faff. Good to know that it's working for you
