I need to ask if anyone else has tried this? I have avoided buying an actual rice cooker for ages because I usually use the hob or electric pressure cooker, but bought the Lidl microwave one the other day on a whim.

Wow. It was not only super quick and easy but also CLEAN! Made of silicone so no evil dried sticky rice welded on.

And actually I just lifted the whole thing to the table to serve. I confess I thought it might just be one of those things which sits in my cupboard but i do reckon i will use this a lot.

My question is whether anyone else has got this and used it for pasta? I see that Lidl is selling a slightly different shaped version for pasta but I think you could use this same one for pasta too.

I will experiment but wondered if anyone else had tried in the meantime?

Oooh, I'd be interested to know this. DD is a pasta fiend and has been allocated catered halls at uni with only a microwave and kettle.

NancyCarey · 04/09/2025 07:48

I’ll let you know when I’ve tried!

Well, I went out and bought one for her yesterday anyway, she did use it I think as it was on the draining rack later but I didn't see her to ask how she got on. Will report back.

OP I bought the rice thingy too as an experiment. I actually tried it tonight but I didn't find it quick. Although it was easy and zero mess.
I think I need to play around with cooking times.
I cooked basmati rice. My microwave doesn't have the 800 setting so I set it at 900 for 10 minutes (instead of 800 for 11 minutes). No idea if that was a mistake or not. The rice wasn't cooked so I put it on for 3 more minutes. It was edible but not completely soft. So I need at least 15 minutes in the microwave. I wonder if this costs more in electricity than using the gas hob to cook rice.

DD was pleased with the pasta one, said it took 6 minutes (she likes it slightly undercooked) and says its a big improvement on her previous attempts to use a pyrex bowl with a plate on top.

What kind of rice are you using? I’ve tried with paella and basmati rice and so far so good. I’m probably doing a ratio of about 2:1 water to rice and it comes out perfectly each time.

The first time I used it I had a bit more water and most of the rice was perfect but the rice at the very bottom was a little bit wet, which is why I changed the ratios.

I’ve also now used it for pasta and the same ratio seems to be working well.

Thank you so much for replying I have bought basmati rice today so I’ll give it another go

1Katy · 13/09/2025 07:26

Yes it was the rice, tried basmati and it came out perfect. Thank you

NancyCarey · 13/09/2025 07:54

I was going to ask how you got on! Thanks for the update. I used mine again yesterday and was marvelling at how easy and clean it is. Love having no sticky pots or crusted on leftovers 🤩
and when my son came home from school and wanted food, I told him to stick half a mug of pasta in with a mug of boiled water and some salt and fire it in the microwave for 9 mins. He was sitting happily eating pesto pasta ten mins later.
life changing stuff!

I have the Lakeland rice cooker. It’s fantastic. The Lidl one sounds like a bargain, but I’m not keen on cooking in silicone, food I’ve cooked in silicone before has tasted really weird.

I bought the pasta cooker in Lidl, but it didn’t come with any instructions. Can anyone send a picture of the instructions? Please

RejoiceandSing · 03/10/2025 18:52

I use a big pyrex jug for both pasta and rice in the microwave and it comes out fine. The trick is to use a much bigger jug than you think compared to the amount of food, I wouldn't do it for more than two portions. After rinsing and soaking the rice for the afternoon, then draining and covering with boiling water, it takes 3 mins on high, 4 mins on medium, 1 min on high.

@EffectivelyDecluttering I have found replacing the plate with microwaveable film, pierced in.a few places is ace.
I like the idea of using a jug but I don't think I have one that is both large and would fit

Advert?

EffectivelyDecluttering · 04/10/2025 08:11

Not an advert.

Thanks @limetrees32, DD tried the jug thing at home before we bought the pasta cooker but has now taken hers to uni, she doesn't have things like large jugs on hand (catered halls with just microwave and kettle) and she says it works fine. We don't really use the microwave at home, it's been relegated to the garage so we wouldn't cook pasta or rice that way.
