What do I do with this to clean and do I bother anyway as what am I keeping it for?

Im having a clear out.

I have a ceramic olive oil jar/bottle/flagon, many years old that came with some lovely olive oil in it, long gone although there might be dregs in it.

It has a narrow top, its cream in colour with olives drawn on it, it has a fat body

I could hold a lot of oil if thats what I wanted it for

But how to clean this thing and should I bother? Shall I chuck it

It seems impractical and its not nice and slim so it takes up a lot of room

Stick some hot, soapy water in it and soak it, drain it out then send it to the charity shop for someone else to worry about.

Actually, don’t inflict it on the charity shop, they get enough junk they can’t sell. Just bin it.

Put some rice, washing up liquid and warm water in and vigorously shake it, that should clean inside. Then you can either use it, put it on display or donate it. If you don't want it, why not recycle it?

No one is going to take this stuff believe me, you cant give it away

Our local charities have constant signs on the doors saying not taking donations.

Bin it or upcycle it with Frenchic paint to match your decor and use as a vase or stick a long candle in

soupyspoon · 29/08/2025 18:47

Ive got a thousand vases

Its in a dresser at the moment with glass doors so its sort of an ornament but Im trying to declutter and was just wondering if I could clean it thoroughly enough to put oil in it, which is currently in the oil cupboard, trying to condense things down but equally I dont want to mix my oils up so it would only get rid of one bottle

Stand it upside-down on some kitchen paper in a bowl for a few days to let the last of the oil drain out, if there is any. Then put in a big squirt of washing up liquid and fill it with really hot water from the kettle - not quite boiling or it might crack. If you have a bottle brush that would help. After doing that, rinse it really thoroughly several times, drain it upside-down again and you should be good to go.

Just recycle it. Glass bottles with narrow necks are a pain to clean, and you clearly don't need it!

soupyspoon · 29/08/2025 19:05

Its ceramic, a big bellied flagon type shape, probably holds about 2 litres at a guess. You cant see through it. Narrow little neck. Stupid thing.

Oh right. Just chuck it then. Or charity shop, once clean. Either way, get rid!

Put it in the bin.

DongDingBell · 30/08/2025 08:42

You've had it for many years, and never er wanted or needed to use it.
Bin it.

Do you have pots in your garden? If so, place it with them for a bit of variety. It will eventually fade and crack with frost and then you can legitimately throw it away.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/08/2025 09:31

Clean it out and refill it with olive oil.

Dissolve a dishwasher tablet in boiling water and pour it in. Give it a good shake. Leave for an hour.
it works for wine decanters- basically it dissolves anything inside the bottle.
